Historical Description

NORLEY is a township, formed in 1836 into a parish, and a scattered village, 1 ½ miles north from Delamere station on the Northwich and Chester section of the Cheshire Lines railway, 3 south-west from Acton Bridge station on the Crewe and Warrington line of the London and North, Western railway, 4 ½ south-east from Frodsham, and 175 from London by rail, in the Eddisbury division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Eddisbury, union and county court district of Runcorn, rural deanery of Frodsham and archdeaconry and diocese of Chester. The church of St. John the Evangelist, rebuilt in 1879 from designs by Mr, J. L. Pearson R.A., F.S.A, at a cost, including the organ, of £5,000, is an edifice of red sandstone, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, and a tower at the east end containing a clock and one bell: the church affords about 300 sittings. The register dates from the year ( ). The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent charge £43, gross yearly value £175, nett £155, in the gift of Samuel Henry Wood-house esq. and held since 1887 by the Rev. Charles Rushbrooke Nunn, of Cambridge and Durham Universities and F.R.G.S. There is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, erected in 1882, and Free Methodist and Primitive Methodist chapels. The Temperance hall was built in 1874, at a cost of £360, and the Foresters’ hall in 1888, at a cost of £300; the Independent Order of Rechabites, No. 19 district, hold their meetings in the Temperance hall. Norley Bank is the seat of Col. Walter Richard Lascelles. J.P. and Norley Hall of Samuel Henry Woodhouse esq. J.P.; the Right Hon. Arthur Hugh Smith-Barry M.P. of Fota Island, Queenstown, is lord of the manor; Samuel Henry Woodhouse esq. is the principal landowner. The soil is light and sandy; subsoil, marl. The chief crops are early potatoes and some land in pasture. The area is 1,411 acres; rateable value, £3,753; population, 694.

By Local Government Board Order 13,117, on 20 Dec. 1881, a detached part of Norley was added to Kingsley; by the Divided Parishes Act, in 1882, a part of Crowton township, known as Firwood Moss, was transferred to Norley; and by Local Government Board Order 13,118, on Dec. 20, 1881, a part of the latter township was annexed to Crowton.

Endowed Church School (mixed), built in 1838, for 125 children; average attendance, 95.
