Historical Description
Poynton, to the left of which is the elegant seat of the Warren family. The mansion is built in the Ionic order of architecture; and the pleasure grounds are beautiful, and are decorated with a handsome sheet of water. The park, which is very extensive, having been augmented within a few years, is judiciously disposed, and in one part commands a delightful prospect, including Stockport, Manchester, and the more remote divisions of Lancashire. It contains various plantations, and considerable quantities of timber; but its subterranean riches, consisting of thick veins of coal, are infinitely more valuable, being probably exhaustless. The occasion of their discovery is thus reported by a modern writer. An old tenant of one of the farms, who was obliged to procure his water from some distance, frequently petitioned the late Sir George Warren to have a well sunk; but, seeing no probability of the attainment of his suit, though he had been repeatedly assured it should be complied with, he gave notice that he would quit the premises, unless the well was immediately executed. Being unwilling to lose a respectable tenant, Sir George resolved to conform to his wishes, and the work was began. The spring lay at a considerable depth; and before they came to the water, the workmen were surprised by the appearance of one of the finest veins of coal in that country; this discovery has greatly enhanced the value of the estate, a colliery having been immediately established, and ever since worked with considerable success.
About three miles eastward from Poynton is Lyme Hall, the seat of the principal family of the Leghs; it is built in an elevated situation, and the park is very extensive, but the surrounding country is bleak, moorish, and unfruitful. The plan of the building is quadrangular, but composed of very incongruous parts; the north and east angles being of the age of Elizabeth, or James the First; the south and west sides are more modern, and erected from the designs of Leoni, in the regular Ionic order. Three sides of the inclosed court are surrounded with a piazza, which gives an air of grandeur to the whole edifice. The park is well stocked with deer, and the venison is of a very superior flavour. This manor was given, by Edward the Black Prince, to Perkin a Legh, an ancestor of the present family for his bravery in recovering a standard at the battle of Cressey.
POYNTON (or Pointon), with Worth, is a township, village and parish, formed August 22, 1871, from the parish of Prestbury, with a station on the Macclesfield and Stockport section of the London and North Western railway and another on the Macclesfield and Marple section of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway, 4 ½ miles south-south-east from Stockport, 171 ¾ from London, 7 north from Macclesfield and 11 ¼ from Manchester, in the Knutsford division of the county, Macclesfield hundred, union and county court district, petty sessional division of Prestbury, rural deanery of Macclesfield and archdeaconry and diocese of Chester. The parish includes the old township of Poynton and Worth, which, together, formed from time immemorial a parochial chapelry. The church of St. George, erected in 1787 by Sir George Warren K.B. of Poynton, in place of the ancient chapel of St. Mary, formerly standing near the Hall and rebuilt in 1859, is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, from designs by Mr, Crowther, architect, of Manchester, and consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and a tower on the south side with spire, erected in 1885 by public subscription, as a memorial to the late Lord Vernon, and containing a clock with chimes and 6 bells: the interior of the church is beautifully decorated, and in the chancel is a marble reredos, presented in 1891 by Lady Vernon, with a carved panel, representing “the Lord’s Supper:” the east window and two others are stained, and there is a memorial window to the late William Alfred Turner esq. of this parish, d. 16 June, 1886: the church affords 606 sittings. The register dates from about the year 1750. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £270, net £258, with 25 acres of glebe, in the gift of Lord Vernon, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Thomas Bridge, of the University of London. There is a Baptist chapel, erected in 1867, and a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1846. The Poynton and Worth news room, near the church, is a red brick building, erected by Lord Vernon, and contains a spacious reading room and a library of 3,000 volumes. Lady Warren Bulkeley’s charity of £50 yearly is the interest of about £1,889, and is applied to the general use of the poor of Poynton and Worth and to educational purposes. The Poynton and Worth collieries, belonging to and worked by Lord Vernon, extend over a large area: the coal is of good quality and the mines are very productive. Lord Vernon P.C. is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is clayey; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats and potatoes. The area is 2,918 acres of land and 48 of water; rateable value, £14,921; the population in 1891 was 2,274.
National, School, built in 1856 & since enlarged, for 550 children; average attendance, 175 boys, 165 girls & 117 infants.
