Historical Description

PULFORD is a parish on the border of Flintshire and comprising the townships of Pulford and Poulton, 5 miles south-by-west from. Chester, 6 north from Wrexham, and about 1 ½ from Rossett station on the Chester and Wrexham section of the Great Western railway, in the Eddisbury division of the county, Broxton hundred, Chester union and county court district, petty sessional division of Chester Castle, and rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Chester. The Pulford brook here forms the boundary between England, and Wales and flows into the Dee. The church of St. Mary the Virgin, erected in 1833 by the late Marquess of Westminster, was rebuilt in the years 1881—84 by the Duke of Westminster K.G. at a cost of £9,000, in the Early Decorated style, of red sandstone, from plans by Mr. John Douglas, architect, and consists of chancel, nave, transepts and a north-western tower with shingled spire containing a clock and 6 bells: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, average tithe rent-charge £149, net yearly value £115, with 10 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Duke of Westminster, and held since 1870 by the Rev. James Reynold Williams B.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. An ancient ampulla discovered in the Castle Hill field here is now in the possession of the Duke of Westminster. The Duke of Westminster K.G., P.C. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is heavy; subsoil, clay. The chief crop is wheat. The area is-parish, 2,562 acres; township, 1,183 acres,; rateable value of parish, £4,993; township, £3,053; the population in 1891 was-parish, 468; township, 298.

Church of England School (infants), built, with a house for the mistress, in 1866, by the late Marquess of Westminster; the school will hold 60 infants; average attendance, 14; it is supported by the Duke of Westminster.
