Historical Description
RAINOW is a township and scattered village 3 miles north-east from Macclesfield, the nearest railway station, and was formed into a parish July 28, 1863, out of the parish of Prestbury; it is in the Knutsford division of the county, Macclesfield hundred, union and county court district, petty sessional division of Prestbury, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Macclesfield and diocese of Chester. The church of the Holy Trinity, erected in 1846, and standing in the centre of the village, is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing one bell, and a clock erected about 1877; there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1800. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £183, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Prestbury, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Arthur Frank Thomas B.A. of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. There is a Wesleyan chapel erected in 1878 and a meeting house for the Society of Friends. The charities for distribution in bread amount to about £2 2s. yearly, and there is 16s. a year for clothing. The Earl of Derby P.C., G.C.B. and the Earl of Courtown are joint lords of the manor and the principal landowners. The soil is clayey and sandy; the subsoil mostly rock. The area is 5,733 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £7,829; the population of the township in 1891 was 1,255, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 1,192.
