Historical Description
THELWALL is a township and village, and was formed into a parish Feb. 8, 1870, from the parish of Runcorn; it is on the south bank of the Mersey, which at this point resumes its course towards the mouth, after its interception by the Manchester Ship Canal, and has a station on the Altrincham and Warrington section of the London and North Western railway, 3 miles east from Warrington, in the Altrincham division of the county, Bucklow hundred, Runcorn union, Warrington county court district, petty sessional division of Altrincham, and in the rural deanery of Frodsham and archdeaconry and diocese of Chester. The Bridgewater canal (now belonging to the Manchester Ship Canal Co.) intersects the township, and the stream of the Laskey brook, which crosses the course of the Ship canal at this point, is carried under it by means of iron pipes. The church of All Saints, erected in 1842, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel with north aisle, nave, north aisle, north transept, and a turret on the western gable containing one bell: the church affords 256 sittings. The earliest register dates from the year 1782. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £56, with residence, in the gift of Rear-Admiral John Parry Jones-Parry, and held since 1869 by the Rev. Thomas Pym Williamson B.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. On the gable end of the “Pickering Arms” is the following inscription, “In the year 920 King Edward the Elder founded a city here and called it Thelwall.” Thelwall Hall, a mansion of brick, pleasantly situated in a park, is the seat of Rear-Admiral John Parry Jones-Parry J.P. who is lord of the manor. Rear-Admiral Jones-Parry, Henry Stanton esq. and the trustees of Captain Fox are the chief landowners. The soil is clay; the subsoil clay and sand. The chief crops are wheat, oats and potatoes. The area is 1,215 acres of land and 43 of water; the rateable value, £5,743; the population in 1891 was 770. By Local Government Board Order No. 14,974, a part of Thelwall known as Old Warps was in 1884 added to Latchford.
