Historical Description

WHEELOCK is a township and parish formed in 1840 from the parish of Sandbach; it is on the road from Sandbach to Crewe, with a station on the Sandbach branch of the North Staffordshire railway, and is 1 mile south from Sandbach, 5 from Crewe, 6 from Middlewich and 2 from Sandbach station, in Elworth parish, on the London and North Western line of railway and in the Crewe division of the county, Northwich hundred, Sandbach section of Northwich, petty sessional division, Congleton union and county court district, rural deanery of Congleton, archdeaconry of Macclesfield and diocese of Chester. The North Staffordshire railway has a branch line to this place for the conveyance of salt and goods, and the Trent and Mersey canal and the small river Wheelock, which falls into the Dane below Middlewich, both pass through the parish. Christ Church, a short distance from the town, and erected about 1838 at a cost of about £1,000, is an edifice of red brick in the Gothic style, consisting of nave, eastern porch and an open eastern turret containing one bell: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1838. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge, £19, gross yearly value, £205, net £200, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Sandbach, and held since 1873 by the Rev. Charles Lane, M.A. of the Royal University (Cork), Ireland. At Hassall Green is an iron church, erected in 1883 as a chapel of ease to Christ Church. There are Wesleyan Methodist, Primitive Methodist, Baptist and Congregational chapels here. Salt is made in considerable quantities, the works at Wheelock and Malkin’s Bank being upon a most extensive scale. The town contains a silk factory and extensive iron works at present (1896) closed in connection with the Salt union and works of the Wheelock Iron and Salt Co. Limited. Mrs. Ackers, of Moreton Hall, Congleton, is lady of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is sandy; subsoil, sand and clay. The chief crops are potatoes, wheat and oats. Cheese is made here to a considerable extent. The area of the township is 690 acres; rateable value, £2,478; the population in 1891 was-township, 826; parish, 2,244.
