Historical Description

WHITEGATE (or Newchurch) and part of Over and Weaverham, with the township of Marton, constitute a parish on the west bank of the river Weaver, 2 ½ miles south from Hartford station on the Crewe and Buncorn section of the London and North Western railway, and 1 mile east from Whitegate station on the Winsford and Over branch of the Cheshire Lines railway, and 5 south-south-west from Northwich, in the Northwich division of the county, first division of Eddisbury hundred, petty sessional division of Leftwich, Northwich union, rural deanery of Middlewich, and archdeaconry and diocese of Chester. The church of St. Mary, erected in 1726 on the site of an earlier structure, and restored in 1875, chiefly by the late Lord Delamere, is an edifice of brick, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, south porch and aisles, and a small western tower with octagonal shingled spire containing one bell: there is a beautiful reredos of Caen stone, and the pulpit is of carved oak: the church affords 320 sittings. The parish register dates from the year 1565. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £118, net yearly value, £278, with residence, in the gift of Lord Delamere, and held since 1878 by the Rev. Henry George Youard. The vicarage house, situated near the church, was erected in 1878, at the expense of Lord Delamere. Vale Royal, the seat of Lord Delamere, is on a gentle elevation near the banks of the river Weaver, and occupies part of the site of the Abbey, some portions of the ancient building being retained in the basement: the mansion, built of red sandstone, consists of a centre with two wings; in the centre of the front is a fine porch, leading to an ante-room, hung round with ancient implements of war, horns of deer &c.: the windows of this room and the corridor are enriched with a profusion of stained glass, chiefly heraldic, which formerly ornamented the Hall at Utkinton; the great hall is a noble apartment 70 feet long, with a roof supported by ribs of carved oak, and is hung round with family and other portraits, and includes some painted by Rubens: the mansion was considerably altered and improved by the late Lord Delamere. The old Hall of Vale Royal suffered considerably during the Civil War, and was plundered by the troops of General Lambert. Vale Royal became the site, in 1277, of the Cistercian monastery of St. Mary and SS. Nicasius and Nicholas, translated here from Dernhall, where it was originally founded by Edward I. in 1266; the several granges of Hefferston, Earnslow, Merton, Bradford, Conwardsley and Knights were included amongst the possessions of the Abbey, the church and buildings of which were completed in 1330, at a cost of £32,000: on the surrender of this house there were 16 monks, and revenues valued at £518. The old and new parks, of about 450 acres, are beautifully wooded and undulating, and the scenery around is very picturesque; in the former is a piece of water, called “Rookery Pool,” 5 acres in extent, and the latter contains a beautiful sheet of water of 29 acres, called “Petty Pool.” Lord Delamere is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The population of the parish in 1891 was 1,519, and the number of acres 4,384.

Lord Delamere’s, School (mixed), near the church, built in 1886, by Lord Delamere, for 150 children; average attendance, about 80.
