Historical Description

WILMSLOW is a town and very large parish, on the river Bollin and the high road from Congleton to Stockport and Manchester, with a station on the Manchester and Crewe section of the London and North Western railway, which crosses the vale of the Bollin by a viaduct of eleven arches; it is 176 ¼ miles from London, 19 from Crewe, 7 east from Knutsford, 40 from Chester, 14 ¼ north from Sandbach, 12 south from Manchester, 6 by rail and 7 by road south-west from Stockport, 12 by rail and 7 by road north-west from Macclesfield, and 7 by road south-east from Altrincham, in the Knutsford division of the county, Macclesfield hundred, Prestbury petty sessional division, Bucklow union, Altrincham county court district, rural deanery of Stockport, and archdeaconry of Macclesfield and diocese of Chester. The parish since 1891 has largely increased and is becoming a favourite place of residence.

The town was from 1878 under the control of a Local Board, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), it is now governed by an Urban District Council, and is divided into four wards.

By order of the County Council, June 28, 1894, confirmed by Local Government Board Order, September 10, 1894, Pownall Fee township and the parts of Bollin Fee and Fulshaw townships, comprised in the old Local Board acre have been constituted the township of Wilmslow. The remaining parts of Bollin Fee and Fulshaw townships now comprise the reconstituted township of Bollin Fee and is included in Alderley Edge or Chorley Urban District.

Wilmslow is lighted with gas from works belonging to the Wilmslow and Alderley Edge Gas Co. Limited. The church of St. Bartholomew is an ancient edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel with north and south chapels and vestry, transepts, clerestoried nave of five bays, aisles, south and west porches, and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells: the belfry stage has been entirely rebuilt since 1872, under the direction of Mr. J. S. Crowther, architect, of Manchester, at a cost of about £700, defrayed by R. B. M. Lingard-Monk esq. of Fulshaw Hall; the bells were at the same time rehung on iron frames and the clock renovated at a cost of £250, raised by subscription. The chancel is separated from the nave by a stone arch, erected in 1863, and the ancient rood screen of oak, carefully restored, has been set within it; the stained east window was presented in 1858 by the Rev. William Brownlow M.A. rector 1829—72, as a memorial to his daughter; the chancel has an oak roof, the carved bosses of which bear the initials of Henry Trafford, rector 1516—37; on the floor is an inscribed slab to Peter Ledsham, rector, ob. 22 July, 1678, and there is a tablet to the Rev. Croxton Johnson, rector, d. 30 Jan. 1814: below the chancel is a crypt, with sedilia, probably part of an earlier church. In the Jesus or Trafford chapel, north of the chancel, and now partly serving as an organ chamber, are two canopied altar-tombs with recumbent effigies, one of an ecclesiastic and the other of a female, with her head resting on a garb; another altar-tomb here has a similar tonsured effigy, and a marginal inscription to Henry Trefort (Trafford) S.T.P. rector here and chancellor of York minster, ob. 1 Aug. 1537: here also are now placed the brasses, with effigies, of Sir Robert del Bothe, of Dunham Massey and Bollyn, ob. 16 Sept. 1459, and Dulcie or Douce (Venables), his wife, ob. 22 Sept. 1453: the figure of the knight is in plate armour, with his feet resting on a greyhound, and his hand and his wife’s conjoined: in this chapel is a memorial window to Gertrude Dorothy Rivaz, d. 21 Dec. 1861, and there is also a very singular oak chest, hewn out of a solid block, and strongly bound with iron; it is 4 feet 2 ½ inches long, 2 feet 10 inches wide, and about 2 feet deep, and the sides and ends are of extraordinary thickness. On the south side of the chancel is the Bolyn or Booth chapel also called the Prescott chapel, in which there is a memorial window to John Clarke Prescott, d. 16 May, 1863, erected in 1866 by his son John Barrow Prescott. The north transept is now fitted with a gallery for the school children, and adjoining it on the east is the vestry, built in 1878 at a cost of £700: the south transept or Hawthorn chapel, attached to Hawthorn Hall, was erected by the Leigh family, formerly resident at the Hall, and their arms are displayed in the windows; at an earlier period it was known as Ryle’s chapel. At the west end are memorial windows to George Bower, of London and Bostal, Kent, d. 15 June, 1865; and to Joshua Bower, surgeon, d. 7 Sept. 1875; and in the south aisle another, placed by Edmund Ashton esq. of Hatfield, in memory of his wife, d. 17 Feb. 1884: the church also contains a large number of monuments and tablets to the Booth, Brownlow, Davenport, Finney, Newton, Roylance and Trafford families. The church was extensively restored and enlarged in 1862—3, at a cost of £4,000, and re-opened in Sept. of the latter year; and about 1878, in addition to the rebuilding of the tower and vestry mentioned above, the south porch was rebuilt at a cost of £300, the whole work being carried out under the direction of Mr. J. S. Crowther, architect, and the church now affords 700 sittings: the churchyard was enlarged at the time of the restoration. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, gross yearly value £1,000, net £790, chiefly derived from tithe rent-charge, with 80 acres, of glebe, and residence, in the gift of Sir Humphrey Francis de Trafford bart. and held since 1872 by the Rev. Emery Bates M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford. The Memorial mission church, erected in 1876 at the sole expense of George Fox esq. Elmhurst Hall, near Lichfield, at a cost of £2,200, and dedicated by the Bishop of Chester, Jan. 17, 1891, is an edifice of brick, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, transept, vestry and organ chamber, and was formerly used for the double purposes of a church and Sunday school: divine service is held on Sunday morning and evening by the clergy of Wilmslow. The Congregational chapel, erected in 1846—7, is of freestone, in the Gothic style, and was greatly enlarged in 1864. The Baptist chapel, in Brook lane, erected in August, 1890, at a cost of about £500, is a plain structure of brick, and will seat 300 persons: fairs are held half-yearly-third Monday in April, and third Monday in October. The local lodge of Odd Fellows holds its courts at the Railway hotel: the Foresters meet at the Old George inn. The charities for distribution in bread and money amount to £20 yearly; Lindow workhouse charity of £348 16s. 11d. yearly, arising from cottages, and 99a. 30p. of land is devoted to the alleviation of poor’s rate, and there is also a sum of £4 16s. for education. Thomas Hall’s charity, net value £23 9s. is distributed in money and clothing on St. Thomas’ day; Bower’s charity consists of the proceeds of £1,000, left by the late Miss Bower to the rector of Wilmslow, for distribution to the sick-poor of the parish in the months October, November, January and February in each year: the Organ Fund consists of the proceeds of £425 for the payment of the organist of the parish church: the Oak Estate charity of about £3 a year, reconstituted by the Charity Commissioners about 1890; Dame Booth’s charity of £2 8s. 6d. yearly, is given in bread on Sundays in the parish church, and there are other small charities.
