Historical Description
ALTERNUN, Alternon, or Altarnum, is a very large parish, township and village, on a tributary of the river Inny, 6 miles south-west from Egloskerry station on the Halwill Junction and Tresmeer section of the London and South Western railway, 8 west-south-west from Launceston railway station and 9 east from Camelford, in the North Eastern division of the county, Lesnewth hundred, petty sessional division of North Middle, Launceston union and county court district, rural deanery of Trigg Major, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Nun (or Nonna) is an edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, north and south porches and a lofty embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: it has a very fine oak roof and a handsome rood screen, panelled and traceried, and restored in 1888 at a cost of £200: the seats, which are beautifully carved, are of uncertain date, but subsequent to 1520: the stairs to the rood loft remain in the north aisle, and in the south aisle is an ancient piscina and bracket: the chancel retains an aumbry and two very curious paintings, dating from about 1620, of the “Crucifixion” and the “Administration of the Holy Eucharist” : the church was restored in 1867 at a cost of £1,280, and has 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1688. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £255, including 113 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Truro, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Alfred Henry Malan M.A. of St. Alban Hall, Oxford. The impropriate rent-charge is commuted at £270, of which £13 14s. yearly is paid to the rector of the neighbouring parish of Minster. Here are two Wesleyan chapels, and one for Bible Christians. Fairs for cattle are held at Five Lanes, on the Monday week after June 24th, and on the last Monday in September. The charities amount to £6 yearly. The manorial rights of Penpont and Treglasta are held by William Coryton esq. of Pentillie Castle, St. Mellion, Charles Gordon Archer esq. of Trelaske, William Day Hanson esq. of Bideford, and others. The principal landowners are Francis Rashleigh Rodd esq. of Trebartha Hall, C. G. Archer esq. of Trelaske, Richard Kittow, George Venning and John Peter esqrs. and there are many small freeholds. The greater part of the parish is on the granite; the soil, at the junction of the granite, is a schist; subsoil, slate. The chief crops are oats, wheat and turnips, but much of the land is in pasture. The acreage is 15,014, inclusive of that portion of Bolventor district which is in the parish of Alternun; rateable value, £6,294; the population in 1891 was 1,078.

A School Board of 5 members was formed July 1, 1875, St. Neot being contributory with two members; S. Pearn, Penpont, clerk to the board; James Climo, Penpont, attendance officer.
The Board School is at Bolventor.
