Historical Description

ANTONY, or West Antony, is a parish on St. Germans creek, 6 miles south-east from St. Germans, in the South Eastern division of the county, South division of East hundred, petty sessional division of East South, St. Germans union, Stonehouse county court district, rural deanery of East, archeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. James is a building of stone, erected in the early part of the 15th century, with arcades of Perpendicular date, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches and an embattled western tower of two stages, containing a clock and 6 bells: in the centre of the chancel floor is a brass with effigy under a rich cusped and crocketed canopy and an inscription to Margery Arundell, the presumed foundress of the church, and daughter of Sir Warin L’Erchedekne kt. ob. 26th October, 1420; there are also many monuments to the family of Carew, 1555—1835, including one to Richard Carew, author of a “Survey of Cornwall,” ob. 6 November, 1620 ; and to that of Wolsdon, 1608—56, with several of later date: the east window, erected in 1847, is a memorial to the Right Hon. Reginald Pole-Carew P.C. d. 3rd January, 1835, to his 2nd wife, the Hon. Caroline Anne (Lyttelton), d. 10th April, 1833, and to his son, the Rev. Gerald Pole-Carew, a former vicar, d. 14th March, 1845; there are also nine others, chiefly memorials: the church affords 200 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1678 ; marriages, 1569; burials, 1677. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelry of Merrifield annexed, joint net yearly value £197, with residence and 6 acres of glebe, in the gift of Col. Reginald Pole-Carew C.B. and held since 1845 by the Rev. John Francis Kitson M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, and surrogate. The church of Merrifield is a small building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, transept and north aisle; there are several stained windows: the church will seat about 100 persons. The Rev. Sudlow Garratt M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford, has been resident curate since 1852. Tregantle and Scraesdon are forts in this parish, at which forces are from time to time quartered. Antony House, the seat of Col. Reginald Pole-Carew C.B. on the banks of the Lynher, is a mansion in the Queen Anne style, built in 1721, from designs by Gibbs, on the site of an ancient castle, by Sir William Carew; the fine staircase and principal apartments are hung with a splendid collection of paintings by distinguished artists, and the house is surrounded by beautifully wooded grounds of 250 acres. Col. Pole-Carew, who is lord of the manor, Lord Graves, and Walter Deeble Boger esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is loam and clay; subsoil, argillaceous slate. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area is 3,177 acres of land, 457 of tidal water and 788 of foreshore; rateable value £6,473, including Torpoint, £10,597; the population in 1891 was 3,684, of which 1,259 are attached to the mother church, and including 100 inmates in St. Germans workhouse and 100 officers and men in Tregantle and Scraesdon forts.
