BLISLAND, anciently called “Bluston” and “Blistonjuxta-Montem,” but in Domesday “Glustone,” is a town-ship, small village and parish, bounded on the west by , the river Camel and north-west by the river De Lank, 5 miles north-east from Bodmin and 7 north from Bodmin Road station on the Great Western railway, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Trigg, Bodmin union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Prothus, or St. Pratt, is an ancient and highly interesting edifice of stone, now chiefly in the Perpendicular style, but with some Norman portions, and consisting of chancel with aisles, nave of four bays, north transept, south aisle, south transept or Lavethan chapel, south porch, and on the north side, continued from the north end of the transept, an embattled tower of three stages, with a stair turret at the north-east angle, and buttresses rising into square pinnacles ; the belfry, pierced by large traceried, windows, contains 6 bells cast in 1790: the north wall of the nave and parts of the western walls of the nave and north transept are Norman work: the spiral staircase leading to the rood loft remains in the north wall of the north chancel aisle, and the south chancel aisle retains a piscina: the font is Perpendicular and consists of a circular basin on an octagonal base; the original Norman font, a rude circular bowl, with incised ornament on the exterior, is still preserved : the south transept or Lavethan chapel was fitted with pews in 1638 by the Reynolds family, for their use; it subsequently belonged to the family of Treise, and next to the Morsheads, who converted it into a private chapel, with an entrance on the south: the church has wagon roofs, carried on angel brackets and relieved by carved bosses : on the floor of the chancel is a brass to John Balsam, a former rector of this parish (1395), ob. Sept. 1410, including his effigy in eucharistic vestments, and an inscription; he had been previously rector of Chelsea (1394) and of Gransden Parva, Cambridgeshire: in the south aisle is a slate tablet inscribed to Susanna, wife of Christopher Toker, gent, of St. Kew, ob. 12th May, 1686: there is also a monument with three male and three female effigies in relief kneeling at a desk, and an inscription to Humfrey Kempe esq. of Lavethan, ob. 10th Nov. 1624, and Jane (Peytonne) his wife, and there are other memorials of this family 1728—31; one to General William Morshead, colonel 51st regiment, d. June, 1822, and others to the Collins (1811—60), Thomas and Lean families, and to Robert Robins, gent, and Elizabeth, his wife, 1680: the communion plate includes a silver-gilt cup, given by George Marrett in 1604: there are 250 sittings.
