Historical Description

BLISLAND, anciently called “Bluston” and “Blistonjuxta-Montem,” but in Domesday “Glustone,” is a town-ship, small village and parish, bounded on the west by , the river Camel and north-west by the river De Lank, 5 miles north-east from Bodmin and 7 north from Bodmin Road station on the Great Western railway, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Trigg, Bodmin union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Prothus, or St. Pratt, is an ancient and highly interesting edifice of stone, now chiefly in the Perpendicular style, but with some Norman portions, and consisting of chancel with aisles, nave of four bays, north transept, south aisle, south transept or Lavethan chapel, south porch, and on the north side, continued from the north end of the transept, an embattled tower of three stages, with a stair turret at the north-east angle, and buttresses rising into square pinnacles ; the belfry, pierced by large traceried, windows, contains 6 bells cast in 1790: the north wall of the nave and parts of the western walls of the nave and north transept are Norman work: the spiral staircase leading to the rood loft remains in the north wall of the north chancel aisle, and the south chancel aisle retains a piscina: the font is Perpendicular and consists of a circular basin on an octagonal base; the original Norman font, a rude circular bowl, with incised ornament on the exterior, is still preserved : the south transept or Lavethan chapel was fitted with pews in 1638 by the Reynolds family, for their use; it subsequently belonged to the family of Treise, and next to the Morsheads, who converted it into a private chapel, with an entrance on the south: the church has wagon roofs, carried on angel brackets and relieved by carved bosses : on the floor of the chancel is a brass to John Balsam, a former rector of this parish (1395), ob. Sept. 1410, including his effigy in eucharistic vestments, and an inscription; he had been previously rector of Chelsea (1394) and of Gransden Parva, Cambridgeshire: in the south aisle is a slate tablet inscribed to Susanna, wife of Christopher Toker, gent, of St. Kew, ob. 12th May, 1686: there is also a monument with three male and three female effigies in relief kneeling at a desk, and an inscription to Humfrey Kempe esq. of Lavethan, ob. 10th Nov. 1624, and Jane (Peytonne) his wife, and there are other memorials of this family 1728—31; one to General William Morshead, colonel 51st regiment, d. June, 1822, and others to the Collins (1811—60), Thomas and Lean families, and to Robert Robins, gent, and Elizabeth, his wife, 1680: the communion plate includes a silver-gilt cup, given by George Marrett in 1604: there are 250 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1564; marriages and burials, 1539; the earlier portions consists of fragments only, imperfect and confused. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £350, including 40 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1892 by the Rev. Edward Vernon Collins M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. A fair is held here for horses, cattle and sheep on the Monday after Sept. nth, the festival of St. Prothus ; a fair is also held at Pounds cawnse on the last Monday in November.

Trewardale, the seat of Mrs. Edward-Collins, is pleasantly situated on the south side of the parish; the estate has successively belonged to the Robyns and Browne families, and the house, rebuilt by Robert Robyns esq. towards the end of the 17th century, was again rebuilt by George Browne esq. about 1773, and the property afterwards passed, by marriage, into the Collins family, the present possessors. Tregaddick, the seat of Sir Warwick Charles Morshead bart. J.P. is pleasantly situated on an eminence overlooking the Camel and De Lank rivers. Trewint, now the residence of Mr. S. J. Cowling, was the seat of the family of Trewynt from the time of King John, or earlier, to the reign of Henry VII. when it was alienated by marriage to the Skenock family, and afterwards to the Smiths; from the latter it was purchased by the Molesworths, who in turn disposed of it to the Collins family; the old house is now in ruins and cattle sheds have been built with its materials: the new house erected in 1890, to the west of the former house, incorporates in its porch a granite doorway from the old building; the estate pays a modus of £3 to the rector in lieu of tithes. In the village is a cross, 4 feet high, with a semi-circular head, bearing a Latin cross in a sunk panel; by the roadside, at a short distance from the village, is another, between 4 and 5 feet high, but now mostly buried, the round head only appearing; this cross formerly stood by the well of St. Prothus ; in a field near is a good bevelled cross head set up on a post, its shaft is in another field: this cross in its complete form originally stood in the churchyard of this parish; at Lavethan are also two heads of crosses removed from Blisland moor; at Peverell’s cross is a tall and fine example, 6 feet in height, the arms of the cross projecting beyond the round head, and near it is a rugged peak called “St. Bartlemy's Tor,” on the summit of which are a chapel and a well; in the grounds at Trewardale is the head of a cross which originally stood at the intersection of the roads to Bodmin and Cardinham, but was removed to its present site by Captain Collins R.N.: it is 3 feet 7 inches high and has a Maltese cross on the round head; the base, now overgrown, stands in a hedge hard by; on a moor near Carbilly is a Druidic circle, called the “Trippet Stones,” consisting of nine upright unhewn stones, rising about 3 feet above the soil; at Carwen is another circle, about 50 feet in diameter, enclosing a smaller one and connected with several more on its exterior, but all much overgrown; on Kerow Down are several scattered circles composed of granite blocks, from 2 to 4 feet high: on Hawke’s Tor is a circle, now imperfect, 152 feet in diameter: near Challowater are circular enclosures, and on Trehudreth down two British barrows. Mrs. Ford, of Pencarrow, owns the manorial rights. The principal landowners are Mrs. Edward-Collins, J. R. Morshead Glencross esq. and Sir W. C. Morshead bart. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay-slate and stone. The chief crops are oats and barley, with extensive moorland. The area is 6,339 acres; rateable value, £3,683; the population in 1891 was 510.

WATERLOO, half a mile from the church; TREGENNA, 1 ½ north-west; CASSACAWN, 1 mile northwest and PENDREIF or PENDRIFT, a mile north, are outlying hamlets.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Sept. 10, 1875, for the united district of Blisland & Temple; W. H. Cowling, Lease, clerk to the board.

Board School (mixed), built in 1880, for 126 children; average attendance, 21 boys, 20 girls & 8 infants.
