Historical Description

The parish of Boconoc is but small; the church appears to have been built in the time of Henry VI. and formerly contained many ancient monuments; but almost all of them were destroyed when the church was repaired and new paved.

The number of houses in this parish are computed to be 47, and the inhabitants about 236. Trewardreth.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BOCONNOC is a parish intersected by a tributary of the river Fowey, 3 miles east-north-east from Lostwithiel station on the Great Western railway, and 7 north from Fowey station on the Cornwall Minerals and Great Western railway, in the South Eastern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of West, union and county court district of Liskeard, rural deanery of West, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church (dedication unknown) is an ancient building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle of nearly equal length, separated from the nave by an arcade of six arches, supported on granite piers, north aisle of shorter dimensions, south porch, and a turret at the south-west angle, containing one bell: the east window is stained, and there are memorial windows to Louisa Susan Anne, wife of W. W. Moore (1864) and Hugh Granville (1875), children of the Hon. G. M. and Lady L. Fortescue; to the Hon. George Matthew Fortescue, second son of Hugh, first Earl (1877); to Lieut.-Col. Cyril Dudley Fortescue D.L. formerly of the Coldstream Guards, d. 1891, and to William Pease esq. (1881), who was steward to the estate; there is a monument to Penelope (Mohun), wife of William Drew esq. ob. 1637, besides others of some interest in the north aisle: the reredos, erected in 1888, was made from old carved wood from Boconnoc House, by Mr. Harry Hems, of Exeter; the lectern and prayer desk are of Spanish chestnut, and were presented by Lady Louisa Fortescue: the communion table is richly carved and has on the north end the inscription, “Made by me, Raynold Mohun, 1631”: the carved work on the organ was designed and executed by the Misses Fortescue, and there is an ancient font: the church was restored in 1873, and will seat 300 persons. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1709; marriages, 1712. The living is a rectory, with that of Braddock (or Broadoak) annexed, joint net yearly value £303, with 84 acres of glebe, in the gift of J. B. Fortescue esq. and held since 1874 by the Rev. Vernon Harcourt Aldham M.A. of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford, and Honorary Canon of Truro. There is a Wesleyan chapel at Couch’s Mill, and one for the Bible Christians about a mile distant. An ancient round-headed stone cross was re-erected on an elevated site, called “Druid’s hill,” in this parish, in 1846; it is placed on a massive square pedestal, raised on three steps, and the total height is about 18 feet. Another cross, 7 feet high, removed from Lanlivery, was placed on a double hexagonal pedestal in 1840, by G. M. Fortescue esq. and an inscription added to the Right Hon. William Wyndham, Baron Grenville P.C., D.C.L., F.S.A. and sometime Chancellor of the University of Oxford, who died Jan. 12, 1834. Near this place, at Braddock Down, a battle was fought Jan. 19, 1643, between the king’s troops, commanded by Sir Ralph Hopton and Sir Bevil Grenville, and the forces of the Parliament, under Col. Ruthven, Governor of Plymouth, when the latter were completely defeated and driven across the Tamar: the obelisk stands within fortifications thrown up by the Royalists. Boconnoc, formerly the property of the Pitt family, Barons Camelford, and now the property and seat of John Bevill Fortescue esq. J.P. is situated about 3 miles north-east of Lostwithiel, in a richly-wooded park of about 300 acres, well stocked with deer and containing an ornamental lake constructed in 1884, from a stream flowing through the park. The mansion, plainly but substantially built of stone, stands on rising ground surrounded by well-grown trees and shrubs, and commands very fine views of the park a extensive additions to the house were made in 1883; in the south front, 110 feet in length, and partly built by the first Lord Camelford, is a gallery 65 feet long, containing many family and other portraits by distinguished artists; on an eminence a short distance from the house stands an elegantly proportioned obelisk, 123 feet high, erected by Lord Camelford, in 1771, to the memory of Sir Richard Lyttleton K.B. who died Oct. 1, 1770: here also is a memorial to F. M. the Duke of Wellington K.G. consisting of five trees planted on the day of his funeral, 9 Nov. 1852 and surrounding a small stone bearing an inscription. John Bevill Fortescue esq. J.P. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is rather light; subsoil, spar and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 2,230 acres; rateable value, £1,785; the population in 1891 was 314.

Parochial School (mixed), built for 60 children; average attendance, 45.
