Historical Description
BOYTON is a village and parish, on the road from Launceston to Holsworthy, in a portion of the county almost surrounded by the county of Devon, which bounds it on the south and west, the river Tamar forming the eastern boundary and separating it from Devonshire; it is 4 miles from Tower Hill station on the Halwill Junction and Launceston section of the London and South Western railway, 5 north from Launceston railway station and 9 west-by-south from Holsworthy, in the North Eastern division of the county, Stratton hundred, petty sessional division of East North, Launceston union and county court district, rural deanery of Trigg Major, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The Bude and Launceston canal, now disused, intersects the parish on its extreme eastern limit, following closely the course of the Tamar. The church of The Holy Name is an ancient building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: the chancel retains an ancient piscina, with credence, and the east window is stained: the roofs of the chancel and nave are of carved oak and in the south aisle are two piscinae and a priest’s door: there is a tablet to William Symons, ob. 1662, who restored to the parish the small tithes and altarage: the church was restored in 1876—7 at a cost of about £860. The register dates from the year 1568. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £133, including 26 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1870 by the Rev. Thomas Walters M.A. of Magdalen Hall, Oxford. Here are Free Methodist and Bible Christian chapels. The principal landowners are H.R.H. the Duke of Cornwall K.G. Major Joseph Holt, of the Grange, Farnborough, Hants, Richard Carlyon Coode esq. of Polapit-Tamar, Werrington, Ralph Baron Rogers esq. and John Bayly esq. of Seven Trees, Plymouth. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area of the parish is 4,460 acres; rateable value, £2,041; the population in 1891 was 342, exclusive of the hamlet of Northcott, which is in Devonshire, and is given in Kelly’s Directory of that County.
A School Board of 5 members was formed November 13, 1874, for Boyton & Northcott, with North Tamerton as a contributory parish, with 2 members; John Meatherell, Bradridge farm, clerk to the board.
