Historical Description
BUDE, or Bude Haven, is a small seaport and bathing resort at the mouth of the river Strat, amidst beautiful coast and inland scenery, and was formed into an ecclesiastical parish August 10, 1836, from the civil parish of Stratton, being 2 miles west from the town of that name, 20 north-west from Launceston and 9 ½ west from Holsworthy terminal station on a branch of the London and South Western railway; a line is now (1897) being constructed from Bude to Holsworthy, to be opened about the middle of 1898 ; the parish is in the North Eastern division of the county, Stratton hundred, petty sessional division and union, Holsworthy county court district, rural deanery of Stratton, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. In 1888 an embankment and promenade, 500 feet long, was made, under the direction of Messrs. Sullivan and Baker. The Bude canal was constructed between 1819 and 1826, at a cost of £128,000, but is not now in working order further than Hele Bridge, a distance of about 2 miles.
The church of St. Michael and All Angels is a building of stone in the Early English style, erected from designs by Mr. Wightwick, at the sole cost of the late Sir Thos. Dyke Acland bart. who also endowed it: it was consecrated September 29, 1835, and enlarged in 1876—7 at a cost of £1,300, and consists of chancel, nave, transepts, north porch and a western belfry containing a clock and 2 bells : in 1892 the church was reseated, and in 1896 a new vestry was built and other improvements made, and there are now sittings for 350 persons : in the churchyard are buried a portion of the crew of the “Bencoolen,” wrecked in this harbour October 21, 1862; the ship’s figure-head has been set up as a memorial. The registers date from the year 1836. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £177, with residence, in the gift of the Right Hon. Sir T. Dyke Acland bart. P.C. and held since 1891 by the Rev. Barton Reginald Vaughan Mills M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. The Wesleyan chapel, with Sunday school attached, was built in 1880, at a cost of £1,972, and is a building of limestone, with freestone dressings, and will seat 250 persons; in 1886 a vestry was added at a cost of £150. The Free Methodist chapel was built in 1879, at a cost of £1,000, and has 220 sittings. There is a reading room; a Parochial hall and Mission room in connection with St. Michael’s church, holding 300, and a Boys' club, in connection with the Bude company of the Church Lads’ Brigade. The Seamen’s shelter and Working Men’s club was erected by voluntary contributions in 1892, at a cost of £100. On the Chapel Rock, now joined to the mainland by the breakwater, there was formerly a chapel, dedicated to the Holy Trinity and St. Michael, but of this structure no traces now remain.
Bude, during the summer months, is much resorted to for sea-bathing, and the number of visitors has of late greatly increased; the beach is a sandy level, extending 6 or 7 miles in length, with a breadth of 1 ½ miles at ebb-tide, and being at once soft and firm, is well adapted either for walking or riding; the approaches from the surrounding neighbourhood are level and pleasant ; the sand contains 78 per cent, of carbonate of lime; it is consequently of great value for wheat lands, and immense quantities are daily carried away by cart and boat. This haven being open to the Atlantic, enjoys a very pure atmosphere, and the climate during winter is mild, the place being free from frosts and snow. The mean annual temperature is 508, mean winter temperature 45° ; average rainfall for past 10 years 32.84, average number of rainy days 150. A stone breakwater, of about 900 feet in length, has been built to pretect the entrance to the harbour, and a basin formed capable of holding vessels of 300 tons ; at spring tides the harbour has an average depth of 20 feet. The pier head and sea-wall of the breakwater, erected in 1823, were destroyed by the sea in 1838. There are good hotels, many good houses, and a sufficiency of convenient lodgings, and on the Summerleaze downs are a number of houses, commanding extensive views seawards. There are golf links of 18 holes belonging to the North Cornwall Golf club, and other links of 9 holes for ladies; a club house was erected in 1895, the use of which is allowed to visitors on reasonable terms. There are also cricket and lawn tennis clubs. The lifeboat stationed here was presented to the National Lifeboat Institution in 1863, in memory of Elizabeth Moore Garden, wife of the late Theophilus Garden esq. of King’s County, Ireland, and bears her name. A fair is held here on September 22. A little business in corn, coal, culm, manure, timber, slate and sea sand (used for agricultural purposes) is carried on. On COMPASS POINT, west of the harbour, is an octagonal tower, 20 feet high, built for the coast guard by Sir T. D. Acland; southward is Efford beacon, about 300 feet in height. To the north-east is “Binhamy Castle,” a moated square area, traditionally the site of a fortified residence, built c. 1335, by Ralph de Blanchminster; at Yedbury are indications of an ancient Roman encampment, 327 by 250 feet in area. Near here, and immediately north of Stratton, is Stamford Hill, on the Broom Hill estate, where a decisive battle was fought May 16, 1643, between the Parliamentary forces under the Earl of Stamford and Sir George Chudleigh, and a body of the king’s troops, commanded by Sir Ralph Hopton and Sir Bevil Grenville, when the rebels, though far superior both in numbers and equipment, were completely defeated and dispersed; in Poughill there are two houses bearing the date 1620, said to have been occupied by the royal commanders the night before the battle. The downs afford delightful rambles along the coast for several miles. There is a coast guard station and rocket apparatus, with telephone communication to Hartland and Clovelly. The Castle, a modern stone mansion, was built by the late Sir Goldsworthy Gurney kt. inventor in 1839 of the Bude light, an arrangement of two or more concentric argand burners, one rising above the other; Sir G. Gurney died February 28, 1875; and the house is now the property of Charles Morgan Cowie esq. Efford Down, the residence of Arthur Mills esq. D.L., J.P. is a handsome building of brick, pleasantly situated on a hill near the sea, and surrounded by a plantation of fir trees. The principal landowners are F. J. Thynne esq. the Right Hon.
