Historical Description

BUDOCK (or St. Budock) is a parish and village, 2 miles west from Falmouth and 2 south from Penryn, in the Truro division of the county, hundred of Kerrier, petty sessional division of Kerrier East, Falmouth union and county court district, rural deanery of Carnmarth, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro; a portion of the parish is included in the parliamentary borough of Penryn and Falmouth. Budock takes its name either from Budocus, a prince of Cornwall, who lived A.D. 500, and was nephew to St. Tilo, Bishop of Llandaff, or from St. Budocus, Bishop of Dol, who lived during the 5th century. The church of St. Budocus is an ancient edifice, supposed to have been erected in the reign of Edward IV. and consists of chancel, nave, south transept, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles and containing 6 bells, hung in 1882: there is an ancient illuminated oak screen, and on the floor of the chancel lies the brass of John Killigrew esq. of Arwenack, ob. 1567, the first Captain of Pendennis Castle, and Elizabeth (Trewinnard), his wife; it comprises effigies of both, the male figure being in armour; and above these are three shields of arms, that in the centre, with crest and mantling, displays the quartered coats of Killigrew, Boleigh, Petit, Carminow, and others; four of these also appear on the shield on the right, and the remaining shield has Killigrew impaling Trewinnard; at the foot is an inscription which includes the name of his eldest son, Sir John Killigrew kt. ob. March 5, 1583—4, and Mary (Wolverston), his wife, with others of that name: there is also a memorial to Sir Nicholas Parker kt. of Ratton, ob. March 9, 1619; and a number of modern monuments: the east window is a memorial to Robert Jope Kinsman esq. and Susanna his wife, 1855 ; and there is another, erected in 1891, to Miss Fox, of Pennance: the west window of the aisle and five others are also memorials: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1603. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £245, including 4 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Truro, and held since 1890 by the Rev. William Henry Hodge, of St. Aidan's. There is a small Mission room at Budock Water. There are Wesleyan chapels at Treverva and at Budock Water. The poor have £2 12s. from Robyn’s charity, a charge on fields known as “bread lands,” on the Barn Farm, which is distributed in bread, and £1 10s. from Randall’s charity, £1 of which is divided among poor widows of the parish on St. John the Evangelist’s day in each year and 10s. to the clergyman for preaching a sermon on the same day. The Convalescent Home, Penjerrick, was erected in 1872 at the expense of the late R. W. Fox esq. F.R.S. and will hold 6 patients. Near Trescobeas is Falmouth Union Workhouse. Penjerrick, the seat of Miss Fox, is a commodious house, situated about 3 miles south-west from Falmouth, with well-arranged grounds; Menehay, of William A. Fawcus esq.; Roscarrack, of Mrs. Bull, and The Crag, of the Misses Sterling, are the chief residences. College, the site of an ancient college, adjoins Penryn. The Swan Pool, a lake about 660 yards in length and 540 in breadth, was formerly an arm of the sea, but is now divided from it by a broad bar of gravel; its deepest part is 13 feet below the level of the sea at high water spring tides. PENDENNIS CASTLE, situated in this parish, on the western entrance of Falmouth Harbour, was first built by Henry VIII. and being at an elevation of 198 feet above the sea, presents a very noble and commanding appearance; in 1646, being then held for King Charles I. by Sir John Arundell of Trerice, it was attacked both by land and sea by the Parliamentary forces, under Sir Thomas Fairfax, from March to August, when the garrison, for want of food, were compelled to surrender; in 1717 it was considerably injured by lightning; the Castle, now forming an irregularly-constructed fortification with modern armaments, of about 14 acres in extent, is garrisoned by small detachments of Royal Artillery, and contains a residence for the lieut.-governor, armoury, barracks, magazine and storehouse; it commands the entrance to Falmouth Harbour. Arthur Francis Basset esq. is lord of the manor. Mrs. Tonkin, of Penwarne, Mawnan; Miss Peard; Col. Thomas Moor Alphonse Horsford, of Bosvathick; the Ecclesiastical Commissioners ; A. F. Basset esq.; Robert and Henry Backhouse Fox; George Grlasson esq.; C. E. A. Reynolds esq. and the Misses Sterling are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, slate and spar and granite. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and pasture. The area is 3,900 acres of land and 445 of water, tidal water and foreshore; rateable value, £11,902; the population in 1891 was 2,414, including part of Falmouth and the officers and inmates in the Falmouth Workhouse.

National School, Budock Water (mixed & infants), for 200 children; average attendance, 30 boys, 25 girls & 16 infants.
