Historical Description

The town of Callington, about 213 miles from London, in point of buildings or situation, is not entitled to much praise; the former being low and unpleasant, the latter rather mean, and principally comprised in one broad street, running north and south. Its woollen manufactory, however, gives it some little importance, and affords employment to some poor people.

This town has no charter of incorporation, but is governed by a portreeve, annually chosen at the court-leet of the lord of the manor; when all who have lived a year in the town are admitted free burgesses, and vote for the members of parliament; the portreeve being, by prescription, the returning officer. It was first summoned to send representatives to parliament in the year 1585, the 27th of Queen Elizabeth; which it has continued to do ever since. The number of voters are about 50.

Callington is member of the parish of Southill, about two miles distant, and has a large chapel of ease, "a spacious towering fabrick," within the precincts of the town, rebuilt at the sole expense of Nicholas de Asheton, Esq. serjeant at law, to whose memory there is a fine monument erected in the chancel.

Callington has a weekly market on Wednesday, and two annual fairs.

There is a curious mural monument, in the chancel of the church at the village of Llandulph, a few miles from Callington, with the following remarkable inscription, in Roman characters, on a brass plate: "Here lyeth the body of Theodore Paleologus, of Pesaro, in Italye, descended from the Imperyal Line of the last Christian Emperor of Greece, being the Son of Camilio, the Son of Prosper, the Sonne of Theodore, the Son of John, the Sonne of Thomas, the second Brother of Constantine Paleologus, that raygned in Constantinople, until subdewed by the Turks; who married with Mary, the daughter of William Ball, of Hadlye, in Souffolke, Gent. and had issue 5 children; Theodore, John, Ferdinando, Maria, and Dorothy; and depted this Lyfe, at Clyfton, the 21st of January, 1636." Over the inscription is the imperial eagle.

About six miles upon the Tavistock-road, to the left of Callington, the Tamar is crossed, from hence, throughout its southern course, dividing the two counties, the country is extremely beautiful and picturesque. Near the spot first noticed, there are several copper and tin mines.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CALLINGTON is a small market town, township and parish, on the road from Liskeard to Tavistock, and also on that from Launceston to Saltash, 9 miles north from Saltash station on the Great Western railway, 15 north-by-west from Plymouth, 11 south-by-east from Launceston, and 9 west-by-south from Tavistock station on the London and South Western and Great Western railways, in the North Eastern division of the county, Middle division of the hundred of East, petty sessional division of East Middle, Liskeard union and county court district, rural deanery of East, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The town was formerly a parliamentary borough, and returned two members, until it was disfranchised by the Reform Act of 1832. A portreeve and other officers are chosen annually at the court leet held by Earl and Countess Compton, who are owners of the manor. The town, which stands on a gentle declivity, is lighted with gas from works belonging to the Callington Gas and Coke Co. and supplied with water by a company formed in 1866 from a spring at Bat Hill; a new reservoir was constructed in 1892 to contain 30,000 gallons of water. The present terminus of the East Cornwall Mineral railway is at Kelly Bray, one mile from the town. The church of St. Mary, dedicated August 31, 1438, is a building of granite, in the Perpendicular style, erected in 1438, and consists of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, embattled south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells: in 1896 the tower was burnt and the clock and bells completely destroyed; but it has since been restored at a cost of £1,000, and 6 new bells hung, and a new dock provided which has four dials and strikes the quarters: in the south aisle the steps to the rood loft remain : the Norman font has a square basin, with carved heads at the corners: four of the windows are memorials: in the chancel is a brass with effigies to the founder, or rebuilder of the church, Nicholas Ashton, a justice of the Common Pleas, 1444, and sometime M.P. for Helston, Launceston and the county during the period 1422—37, ob. 10th March, 1465—6, and Margaret (Brooke, or Broke) his wife; the effigy of the judge represents him in a wig or cap and a robe lined with fur; his wife wears a long fur-trimmed dress; there are matrices of children and shields, and a marginal inscription, not now perfect; below the figures is an epitaph to Nicholas Ashton in twelve Latin lines: on the north side is an altar tomb of alabaster, with panelled sides inclosing shields of arms and bearing a recumbent figure of alabaster in armour of Sir Robert Willoughby, first Lord Willoughby de Broke K.G. ob. 1502; the effigy is clothed in the mantle of the Garter, and wears the collar and badge; on the soles of the feet are the figures of two monks with rosaries: there are also a number of modern memorials: in 1858—9 the church was restored internally under the direction of J. P. St. Aubyn, architect, at a cost of £1,000, and in 1882 was enlarged by the addition of a second north aisle at a cost of £1,988, a chancel screen and choir stalls of carved oak being added at the same time and a new clock fixed at a cost of £155 : there are 390 sittings. In the churchyard stands an ancient cross 8 feet high, with an elaborately carved square head, much mutilated, and an octagonal shaft. The register dates from the year 1558. The living is a rectory, annexed to that of South Hill, joint net yearly value £594, including 250 acres of glebe, with residence at South Hill, in the gift of the Countess Compton, and held since 1886 by the Rev. John Shaw M.A. of St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1845, a Free Methodist chapel (1852), Bible Christian chapels (1850), one for Plymouth Brethren (1862) and Salvation Army barracks. A Cemetery of 2 acres was formed in 1877, at a cost of £900, with a mortuary chapel; it is now under the control of the Parish Council. Haye Charity consists of two fields, the rent of which, about £16 yearly, is given to the poor. In this neighbourhood there are several mines and a tannery. The market house was built in 1832. The weekly market is on Wednesday, and is well supplied with provisions, corn and various merchandise. A large cattle market is held on the first Wednesday in every month. The weekly and cattle markets are now controlled by a local committee of 15 members; Harry Davis esq. M.D. chairman. Here are the head quarters of the B Company 2nd Volunteer Battalion Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, which musters about 100 men. The Freemasons’ hall was erected in 1879, at a cost of £600, and adjoining the Temperance hotel is the Public Hall, built in 1884, holding 500 persons. The Kit Hill Granite Company have very extensive quarries here, producing granite of fine grain and of the best quality, largely used in the construction of the Thames Embankment, in the new Blackfriars bridge and in the fortifications round Plymouth, as well as for the new bridge over the Thames at Battersea. Dupath Well, in this parish, and about one mile south of the town, is a spring of clear water flowing into and through an ancient chapel or baptistery: the building, which is in good preservation, though now grey with age, is constructed of granite and roofed with huge slabs; at the angles are rude pinnacles, and on the west gable is a kind of open turret; the interior is divided by an arch into two portions resembling a nave and chancel, and the stream discharges itself through the western doorway; the chapel was restored some time since by Lady Ashburton. On Kit Hill, situated on Hingston Down, anciently Hengesten-dune, about 1 ½ miles to the north of the town, are the remains of an ancient camp, 1,067 feet above sea level; from this point very fine views are obtained. The Earl and Countess Compton, who are lords of the manor, George Sydney Strode Strode esq. of Newnham Park, Plympton St. Mary, Devon, Commander Arthur Hill Ommanney Peter Hill-Lowe R.N. and the representatives of the late David Wm. John Horndon esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, day. The chief crops are roots, corn and pasture. The area is 2,492 acres; rateable value, £5,757; the population in 1891 was 1,888.
