Historical Description

Calstock Church, a neat Gothic building of granite, with a handsome tower, situated on the top of a very steep woody hill, forming one of the banks of ' the river.

One mile from hence is Harewood House, the seat of Walter Roberts, Esq. an elegant modern building. From Calstock churchyard, and Mr. Foote's grounds, are fine views of some of the most romantic parts of the Tamar, in the neighbourhood of Tavistock, Newbridge, and the Weirhead.

In the parish of Calstock is Cotehele, or Cuttayle House, an ancient mansion belonging to the Earl of Mount Edgecumbe, situated on a bold knoll, on the western bank of the river.

The antiquity of the furniture of this mansion will excite much curiosity: it is said to be of the workmanship of the time of Henry VIII. and Queen Elizabeth, and to have been in the house ever since the reign of the latter sovereign. The hall contains a great collection of ancient armour; and there are many other curiosities, well deserving the traveller's notice.

Cotehele is so surrounded by wood of very fine description, that the Tamar can only be seen from the windows of the higher apartments. The woods between the house and the river contain some fine Spanish chesnuts, of immense size, not inferior in grandeur to the proudest oak, contributing very much to the beauty of the scene, which is rendered still more picturesque, by a small gothic chapel, built upon a rocky eminence, rising abruptly from the Tamar. According to Carew, this chapel was built by Sir Richard Edgecumbe, in grateful memory of his escape from the tyranny of Richard III.

About three miles below Cotehele, is Pentilly Castle, beautifully situated on the rising banks of the Tamar : the declivities towards the river luxuriantly clothed with wood, consisting of elm and lime trees of great size and beauty. The building, from its embattled form, has obtained the appellation of castle, but is of modern construction.

In the grounds of this seat is a lofty bank, adorned with a tower, to which is attached a re markable history, which Mr. Gilpin, in his "Observations on the Western Parts of England," thus narrates: "Mr. Tilly, once the owner of Pentilly House, was a celebrated atheist of the last age. He was a man of wit, and had by rote all the ribaldry and commonplace jest against religion and scripture, which are well suited to display pertness and folly, and to unsettle a giddy mind; but are offensive to men of sense, what ever their opinions may be, and are neither in tended nor adapted to investigate truth. The brilliancy of Mr. Tilly's wit, however, carried him a degree further than we often meet with in the annals of profaneness. In general, the witty atheist is satisfied with entertaining his contemporaries; but Mr. Tilly wished to have his sprightliness known to posterity. With this view, in ridicule of the resurrection, he obliged his executors to place his dead body, in his usual garb, and in his elbow-chair, upon the top of a hill, and to arrange on a table before him, bottles, glasses, pipes, and tobacco. In this situation he ordered himself to be immured in a tower of such dimensions as he prescribed, where he pro posed, he said, patiently to wait the event. All this was done; and the tower, still inclosing its tenant, remains as a monument of his impiety and profaneness. The country people shudder as they go near it.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CALSTOCK is an extensive parish, village and township, within the port of Plymouth, on the beautiful river Tamar, which forms the chief part of the Eastern boundary of the county, and is navigable for small vessels as far as Morwellham and for vessels of 100 tons to the locks at Nutstakes, 5 miles east from Callington, 14 north-east from Liskeard, 1 ½ miles from Beer-Alston station on the London and South Western, railway, which is reached by a ferry across the river Tamar, and 6 south-west from Tavistock stations on the Great Western and London and South Western railways, in the North Eastern division of the county, Middle division of the hundred of East, petty sessional division of East Middle, Tavistock union and county court district, rural deanery of East, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The Callington and Tavistock high road passes through this parish. The church of St. Andrew, which stands on a commanding eminence, is an ancient building of Cornish granite in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, a mortuary chapel, built in 1588, and belonging to the Edgcumbe family, vestry, south porch and an embattled western tower, with octagonal pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells, cast in 1773, and rehutng in 1893; in the chapel, among others, are the tombs of Richard Edgcumbe, ob. 1588, and of Jemima, daughter of John, 1st Baron Crew, of Stene, and wife of Edward, 1st Earl of Sandwich, ob. 1674: in the north arcade of the nave are some ancient mural paintings: the east window is a memorial to Isaac Rosekilly, d. 1883; there is also a memorial window to the Dowager Countess of Mount Edgcumbe, d. 1881, and another to the late Edward Williams esq. of Honeycombe: in the south aisle is a copy of the letter of thanks from Charles I. sent to all the parishes in Cornwall, and dated 1643 : in the porch are the remains of a holy water stoup and a deeply carved tombstone commemorating Griffith Stevens, ob. 1591, and John Stevens, ob. 1620: there are 320 sittings. The churchyard was enlarged in 1880 to three acres and an additional acre was added in 1887. The existing register dates from the year 1656. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £295, including 61 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of H.R.H. the Duke of Cornwall K.G. and held since 1865 by the Rev. Thomas Hullah M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford, hon. canon of Truro, surrogate and J.P. Cornwall. All Saints, Harrowbarrow, erected in 1871, at a cost of about £700, as a chapel of ease to the parish church, consists of apsidal chancel, nave, north porch and a western bellcote containing one bell. There are 150 sittings. St. Michael and All Angels, Latchley, also a chapel of ease, was built in 1883, at a cost of £1,147, and has 150 sittings. There are also licensed chapels at Cotehele and Metherell. There are Wesleyan chapels at Calstock, built in 1870, Albaston (1860), St. Ann’s (1881) and Latchley (1824) ; Free Methodist chapels at Calstock and Gunnislake; Bible Christian chapels at Albaston, Metherill and East Harrowbarrow, and Baptist chapels at Calstock and Metherill. A burial board of 9 members was formed in 1859. A cemetery was formed at Drakewalls and a portion thereof consecrated in 1888; it has a mortuary chapel and is now under the control of the Parish Council. There are many copper and tin mines, but the only one now working is The East Cornwall Tin Mining Syndicate Limited, at Harrowbarrow : a considerable number of the miners at the Devon Great Consols Mines, in the adjoining county, live in this district. Messrs. Thomas Westlake and Co. have brick works both here and at Gunnislake, and there is a brewery and a tannery. Large quantities of coal, timber and manure are imported. In May, 1872, the East Cornwall Mineral Railway Company opened 9 stations in this parish, but only three, viz., Calstock, Incline and Drakewalls, are now used. The Saltash, Three Towns and District Steam Boat Company Limited have vessels which trade from here to Plymouth. Harewood House, once the seat of Sir William Lewis Salusbury-Trelawny bart. and now unoccupied, is half a mile east from Calstock and occupies one of the most delightful sites on the banks of the Tamar. Cotehele House, the residence of the Lady Ernestine Edgcumbe, one mile west from Calstock, is an ancient and most interesting mansion of the Tudor period, and one of the best remaining specimens in this country of mediaeval domestic architecture; it is situated on an eminence on the western bank of the Tamar, almost surrounded with wood, very pleasant views of the river being obtainable from some of the upper windows : the house consists of two courts with an embattled gate tower; and the buildings include a banqueting hall with a fine open timbered roof and suits of armour ranged along the walls ; the windows are enriched with the armorial shields of the Cotehele family, from whom the estate passed by marriage to that of Edgcumbe in the reign of Edward III.; most of the rooms are hung with interesting tapestry and attached to the house is a domestic chapel licensed by the late Bishop Phillpotts, and originally licensed as an oratory by Bishop Stafford, 12th May, 1411; it has a stained east window and services are conducted here every Sunday afternoon by the rector or one of his curates; in the grounds stands another chapel erected by Sir Richard Edgcumbe in the reign of Richard III. ; a cenotaph here in fac-simile of his tomb at Morlaix, where he died (1499) while acting as ambassador to France, has been removed to the domestic chapel; the grounds are magnificently wooded and the scenery on the river Tamar in the neighbourhood is very beautiful. Michael Williams esq. who is lord of the manor, the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe P.C., L.L. John Mason esq. and the Messrs. Bowhay are the principal landowners. The soil is light; the subsoil is granite and clay slate. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and pasturage. The area is 5,828 acres; rateable value, £12,639; the population in 1891 was 6,150.

Honeycombe, the property of the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, but now (1897) unoccupied, is 2 miles northwest from Calstock and is pleasantly situated.

ALBASTON is 1 ½ miles north-west; CHILSWORTHY, 3 miles north-west; HARROWBARROW, about 3 miles west-by-north, at which place there is a school chapel; LATCHLEY, 4 miles north-north-west, is on the banks of the Tamar ; METHERILL, 2 miles west; ST. ANN’S CHAPEL, 2 ½ miles north-west.
