Historical Description

Between Hayle and Redruth are the Cambourn copper-mines, situated along the bottom of the north side of a ridge of granite hills, terminating abruptly, near the latter town. The different mines have been already mentioned in our account of the mineralogy of the county, under the names of Huel Gons, Stray Park, Dolcouth, Cook's Kitchen, and Tin Croft. Cook's Kitchen was supposed one of the most productive mines in Cornwall. Between 300 and 400 persons were constantly employed in this mine.

In Camborne is Trehiddy Park, the seat of Francis Basset Lord de Dunstanville. The manor house was built by John Pendarvis Basset, Esq. a relative of the present proprietor, chiefly of Cornish free-stone, and consists of a handsome square dwelling-house in the centre, and four detached pavilions at the angles. On the summit of the house is a statue of the Farnese Flora, executed in Coade's artificial stone. There is a good collection of paintings at Tiehiddy, among which are several by Vandyke, Sir Godfrey Kneiler, Sir Peter Lely, and Sir Joshua Reynolds. The park and grounds contain in the whole about 700 acres, of which the lawn and a sheep-walk compose 150, and 130 are woodland.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CAMBORNE is a market town and parish, with a station on the West Cornwall section of the Great Western railway, 3 miles south-west from Redruth, 14 northeast from Penzance, 14 north-west from Falmouth, 12 west-south-west from Truro and 312 from London, in the North Western division of the county, hundred of Penwith, petty sessional division of East Penwith, Redruth union and county court district, rural deanery of Cammarth, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The town from 1873 was under the control of a Local Board, but is now governed by an Urban District Council of 15 members, formed April, 1895, under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Viet. c. 73): a system of main drainage was carried out by the late Local Board at an outlay of nearly £4,300, and the town is well supplied with water by a company from reservoirs at Crowan, and the streets are lighted with gas by the Camborne Gas Co. The church of St. Martin is an ancient building of granite, in the Later Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of seven bays, aisles, south transept, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 8 bells, of which the tenor and another were added in 1882: there are several fine monuments to the Pendarves family from 1655 to 1853, and various others of modern date: in the south aisle is a magnificent heraldic window, placed as a memorial to E. W. Wynne Pendarves esq. M.P. by his widow, Tryphena, in 1864; and there are three other stained windows: the reredos of Sienna marble was erected in 1761, at the cost of Samuel Percival esq.; near the porch is an ancient cross, and below the communion table is an ancient altar slab, inscribed, “Leviut jusit hie altare pro anima sua”; it was formerly built into the exterior wall of the transept, but in 1862 was removed to its present position: the church was restored in 1862, at a cost of £1,500; and a new south aisle added in 1878—9, at a total cost of £4,000: there are 750 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £412, including 55 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Arthur Francis Basset esq. and held since 1858 by the Rev. William Pester Chappel M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford, hon. canon of Truro, and surrogate. The Mission church, Trelowarren street, was erected in 1885, at a cost of £1,700, and affords 230 sittings. The Catholic chapel, on Beacon hill, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, was built in 1859 and has 300 sittings. The Bible Christian chapel, Trelowarren street, was rebuilt in 1871 and will seat 600 persons. The Primitive Methodist chapel, Trevensen street, erected in 1850, at a cost of £1,033, seat 430 persons. There are Free Methodist chapels in North Parade and at Roscroggan; and Wesleyan chapels in Chapel street (1,260 sittings), Centenary street (1,000 sittings) and in Tuckingmill (800) sittings. The Cemetery, in Hayle road, consisting of 3 ¾ acres, was opened September 15, 1889, and has a mortuary chapel; it is under the control of a burial board of 9 members. The Market hall, a spacious quadrangular edifice of stone with granite dressings, was erected by the late John Francis Basset esq. in 1866, at a cost of about £4,000, and has a clock tower with four illuminated dials; there is a large assembly room over the market hall, and another in which the magistrates hold their sittings. The Working Men’s Institute, a plain but substantial building of stone, situated at the junction of Market place and Fore street, and erected in 1872, at a total cost of £1,000, was the gift of the late G. L. Basset esq. of Tehidy, to the officers of the Tehidy Working Men’s Club, at a nominal rent of 1s. yearly, the only restriction being that the donor should resume possession in the event of the club proving a failure; it contains a spacious and well-lighted reading room, provided with daily and weekly papers, a library added in 1881, a concert room, billiard room and a refreshment bar. The Camborne Mining and Science and Art Schools adjoin the institute; the building is of stone with granite dressings and was erected in 1883, at a cost of about £1,400, and an additional sum of £1,100 has since been spent on the fabric and fittings; in 1895 the premises were enlarged so as to include a more convenient and larger laboratory, with furnace and vanning rooms; in 1897 a portion of the South Condurrow mine was acquired so that students may obtain a knowledge of practical mining under the authority of the school, and with the supervision of competent instructors; the site was given by the late G. L. Basset esq. who was also a chief contributor; there are about 380 students attending the classes. The Literary Institute, in Chapel street, founded in 1829, comprises a library and newsroom, and a museum containing specimens of minerals of the district; there are about 180 members. In Chapel street is also the Smith Memorial Wesleyan Institute, erected in 1887 to the memory of George Smith esq. LL.D., F.S.A.; it comprises a library and reading room and has about 160 members. The Passmore Edwards Free Library is a building of stone, erected at a cost of £2,000, and opened by Henry Passmore Edwards, May 23, 1895; it contains about 5,400 volumes. The Dolcoath Tin mine in this parish employs about 1,400 persons. The B Company of the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, has an armoury at Wheal Gurry. Fairs are held on the 7th of March, Whit-Tuesday, 29th of June and nth of November, yearly. The charities amount to about £67 yearly, of which £30 is applied to education, £3 for repairs of church and £34 distributed in money and fuel. The Public Dispensary, Fore street, was established in 1842, and is supported by voluntary subscriptions; about 210 patients are treated annually. Camborne was the birthplace, 13 Ap. 1771, of the great engineer, Richard Trevithick, the inventor, in 1796, of the high pressure steam engine, patented in 1802, and of the locomotive for railways, whose system was adopted and applied by Mr. George Stephenson; Trevithick also originated the ballast engine, and was the engineer, in 1804, of the first, but unsuccessfully attempted Thames Tunnel, carried 1,000 feet under the Thames: it was at Camborno that Trevithick and Andrew Vivian, also a native of this place, first tried the locomotive about the year 1800: the site of their workshop, in which the first engine was made, is now inclosed in the grounds of Rosewarne. Arthur Woolf, the inventor of double cylinders for engines and other improvements, was also born here. Two weekly newspapers are published here: the “Cornish Post and Mining News” and the “Western Star.” Rosewarne is the residence of William Foxwell esq. Arthur Francis Basset esq. who is lord of the manor, and the Rev. Sir Vyell Donnithorne Vyvyan bart. of Trelowarren, Mawgan, William Cole Pendarves esq. of Pendarves, Treslothan, William Henry Harris Hartley esq. and the representatives of the late C. W. Reynolds esq. of Trevenson, are chief landowners. The soil is loamy and some slate; the subsoil is clay. The crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 6,931 acres; rateable value, £37,185; the population in 1891 was 14,700; the population of the ecclesiastical district is 7,890.
