Historical Description
In the parish of Constantine, is a massy rock, called a Tolmen, or vast stone, poised on two natural rocks, 33 feet long, by 1412 feet wide, 18 feet high, and 97 feet in circumference; supposed to contain 750 tons of stone: the surface wrought all over with rock basons, or shallow excavations. These excavations are most probably effected by the decomposition of the rock in those places upon which water remains for any length of time.
CONSTANTINE is a parish and large village, on the Helford river, 7 miles south-west from Falmouth, 6 east from Helston, and 6 south-west from Penryn (which are the nearest railway stations), in the Truro division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of East Kerrier, Falmouth union and county court district, rural deanery of Kerrier, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Constantine is a foundation of great antiquity, there being evidences to prove that a church (apparently collegiate) was in existence here at the time of the Domesday survey; it must long have held, and still holds, a very important position in the neighbourhood, and is most beautifully situated, commanding a full view of the thickly-wooded estates of Trelowarren and of the fertile valley above the lovely estuary of the Helford; it is a building of very fine proportions, constructed chiefly of granite and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, Bosahan aisle or chapel, north porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 3 bells, all cast in 1809: five of the windows are stained: the rood loft stairs, sedilia and a stoup in the south porch remain: there are brasses and other memorials to members of the Trefusis, Carminowe, Pindarves, Grylls, Vivian, Bolitho, Pender and Rogers families: there is also a very interesting palimpsest brass to Richard Gerveys esq. ob. 1574, and Jane (Trefusis) his wife and 16 children, with effigies and an inscription: the obverse displays effigies of both under a double arch, the male figure being in civil costume; between them is a quartered shield, and in a long compartment below are the figures of 8 boys and 8 girls ; the whole is inclosed in a marginal inscription, showing that both were buried on the same day, Oct. 2, 1574; this brass on being taken up for restoration by Mr. J. G. Waller F.S.A. in 1860, was found to be palimpsest, the reverse exhibiting the head and breast of a knight in armour, c. 1375, of Flemish work; the head rests on a diapered tunic, supported by angels, and the tunic is heraldic, being charged with a bendlet between 3 crescents; the brass, exhibited at a meeting of the Soc. Antiq. Lond. Nov. 15, 1860, has now been replaced : at the east end of the Bosahan aisle is a brass to John Pendarves esq. ob. 16th July, 1616, Melior (Gearveis) his wife, ob. 17th Mar. 1607, and two children; it has effigies of both, kneeling before a table, and a child behind each parent; above is a shield of arms, impaled, and at the foot an inscription; there is also a monument to Jane (Penticost), wife of William Thoms, ob. 1597, and others of later date: the work of restoration was commenced in 1859, when a sum of £635 was expended on the interior: in 1878 massive and beautiful roofs were placed over the chancel, nave and aisles, at a cost of over £1,200: in 1883 the restoration of the tower and the Bosahan or Trefusis aisle, and the enlargement of the churchyard was carried out, a large addition to the latter being given by the Rev. Sir Vyell Donnithorne Vyvyan bart. of Trelowarren: there are 550 sittings. The register dates from the year 1581. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, including 10 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Truro, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Arthur Harrison B.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. Here are Wesleyan and Bible Christian chapels. There is a library containing nearly 500 volumes. The charities are £2 yearly value, distributed in money. Here are large quarries of excellent granite, a small iron mine not now worked, an extensive oyster fishery on the Helford river, and two grist mills. At Bonallack and Budock Vean are some remains of ancient chapels, and at Bosahan a subterranean passage called “Pixies’ Hall,” about 30 feet long, with walls of unwrought granite. The Tolmen, or Maen rock, a huge oval mass of granite, 33 feet long with an average width of 17 feet, and weighing 450 tons, was formerly supported on two other blocks of stone, so that persons were able to pass beneath it, but was unfortunately thrown down during some quarrying operations in 1870. A furlong west of High Cross are the remains of a circular fort, about 50 yards in diameter. The Rev. Sir Vyell Donnithorne Vyvyan bart. Lord Clinton and W. E. T. Bolitho esq. of Penzance are the chief landowners. The manor of Merthen is in this parish. The soil is light and heavy loam; subsoil is granite and clay slate. The chief crops are barley and green crops; a large proportion of the land is pasture. The area is 7,900 acres of land and 475 of water and foreshore; rateable value, £9,256; the population in 1891 was 1,765.
POLWHEVERAL, half a mile south-east, on the Helford river; PORT NAVAS COVE (the little port) 2 miles south-east, and SEWORGAN, 2 miles north-west, are other hamlets.
