Historical Description

In Creed we find Trewithian, the seat of M. G. Cregoe, Esq. commanding, from its elevated situation, some very extensive and beautiful prospects towards the north and east. The borough of Grampound is about 260 miles from London, and situated on the river Fal, in the parishes of Creed and St. Probus.

The corporation consists of a mayor, eight aldermen, or magistrates, a recorder, and a town-clerk; and the representatives in parliament are elected by the magistrates, and all the inhabitants paying scot and lot. The number of voters amounting to 25 only.

CREED, with Grampound chapelry, is a parish and township, 3 miles south from Grampound Road station on the Great Western railway, 6 south-west from St. Austell and 9 east from Truro, in the Mid division of the county, west division of Powder hundred, petty sessional division of Powder South, St. Austell union and county court district, rural deanery of Powder, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The river Fell, which separates this parish from Probus, is crossed at Grampound by a substantial stone bridge of two arches. The church of St. Crida is a building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, south aisle, north transept, south porch and an embattled western tower, built in 1733, with four pinnacles and containing 3 bells, of which the treble is undated; the second has an inscription to St. Thomas, in Old English letters; the tenor was cast in 1633 : in the transept is a stoup, with a Norman shaft and Decorated hood moulding: the rood loft stairs and part of the screen remain: there are memorials to Thomas Denys gent. 1589, and Marion, his wife, 1570, and Henry Denys B.C.L. their son, 1602, with others of a later date: the church has 200 sittings. The register, incorporating Grampound, dates from the year 1653. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £205, including 30 acres of glebe, with house, in the gift of C. H. T. Hawkins esq. and held since 1895 by the Rev. Charles Baker M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. Garlenick, the property and residence of John Gwennap Dennis Moore esq. J.P. was rebuilt early in the present century, and is pleasantly situated in a wooded valley. Christopher Henry Thomas Hawkins esq. of Trewithan, Probus, is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe P.C., L.L. Viscount Falmouth, Lord Robartes, George R. G. Carlyon esq. John Tremayne esq. of Heligan, St. Austell, John Charles Williams esq. of Caerhays Castle, St. Michael Caerhayes, Michael Henry Williams esq. of Pencalenick, the trustees of the late Rev. John Daubuz B.A. and John Gwennap Dennis Moore esq. of Garlenick, Grampound Road. The soil is a rich loam; subsoil, marl and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. This is purely an agricultural district. The area is 2,666 acres; rateable Value, £3,012; and the population (exclusive of Grampound) in 1891 was 244.
