Historical Description
Sir John St. Aubyn, Bart. has a seat in this neighbourhood called Clowance, in the parish of Crowan, which has been in the possession of the family ever since the time of Richard II. It has been considerably improved by the present owner of the estate. The large park, pleasure-grounds, and the great abundance of fine trees which shade its walks, have a striking effect in a country so dreary as that in its immediate neighbourhood. There are some curious and valuable paintings at Clowance, and a collection of rare and choice prints.
Pendarves, the seat of E. W. Stackhouse, Esq. is about three miles from Clowance: a large handsome stone building, erected on an eminence commanding extensive views over the western part of the county. In a field near this house is a cromlech, consisting of three upright stones, and another covering them.
CROWAN is a township and parish, near the road from Camborne to Helston, 4 miles south from Camborne station on the West Cornwall section of the Great Western railway, and near the Praze and Nancegollan stations on the Helston branch of the same line, in the North Western division of the county, Penwith hundred, petty sessional division of Penwith East, Helston union and county court district, rural deanery of Kirrier, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Crewenna, restored and re-pewed in 1872 at a cost of upwards of £2,000 (exclusive of the chancel, restored by the patron), is a building of granite, in the Gothic style, with some incongruous Classic additions, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and an embattled western tower, 70 feet high, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells, re-hung in 1896 at a cost of nearly £100: the north aisle contains several monuments to the St. Aubyn family, and also the ancient brasses of the St. Aubyns (1400—1599), of which engravings are given in Polwhele’s “History of Cornwall”; these were in 1893 bedded in slate and replaced in the aisle: the existing memorials range from 1629 to 1839: in the south aisle is a window to Henry Jenkin of Kerthen, 1860; the stained east window was given by Mrs. H. J. Molesworth-St. Aubyn, in memory of her husband; another at the end of the south aisle is a memorial to the wife of George Hickman Johns esq. of the India civil service and son of the late vicar, who died at Poonah, India, in 1876, and J. Tremenheere Johns, his brother, who was drowned at Oxford in 1855 : on the exterior east wall is a memorial to Richard Tregeare, with a quaint inscription, 1668: in 1892 a vestry and organ chamber were built by the patron of the living, an organ erected by Mrs. Molesworth-St. Aubyn, in memory of her father and mother, and a south porch built as a memorial to the Rev. John White Johns M.A. vicar, 1884—9: there are sittings for about 400 persons. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1692; marriages, 1696; burials, 1697. The living is a vicarage, net income £290, with residence and 45 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Rev. St. Aubyn Hender Molesworth-St. Aubyn M.A. and held since 1889 by the Rev. Charles Rowland Wynne de Cerjat. Here are reservoirs for the supply of the parishes of Crowan, Camborne and Illogan, and holding about 26,000,000 gallons. The inhabitants are chiefly occupied in mining and agriculture. Clowance, the seat of the Rev. St. Aubyn Hender Molesworth-St. Aubyn M.A., J.P. is a mansion of granite, situated in a well-wooded park containing a lake formed by one of the branches of the river Hayle and surrounded by a high wall about 4 miles in circumference: the mansion was twice burnt down within 6 years (1837 and 1843), but has been rebuilt: it contains a collection of pictures by eminent masters. The Rev. St. Aubyn H. Molesworth-St. Aubyn M.A. who is lord of the manor, the Duke of Leeds and Lord Churston are the chief landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, principally granite. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 6,504 acres; rateable value, £8,489; the population in 1891 was 2,468.
