Historical Description

CURY is a township and parish, 5 miles south-south-east from Helston terminal station of a branch of the Great Western railway, and 12 south-west from Falmouth, in the Truro division of the county, western division of the hundred of Kerrier, petty sessional division of Kerrier West, Helston union and county court district, rural deanery of Kerrier, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro.

The church of St. Corantyn or St. Ninian is a building of granite, chiefly in the Late Decorated style, consisting of chancel and nave of six bays, north aisle, south transept or Bochym chapel, which belongs to the manor of Bochym, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 3 bells, the treble dated 1847 and the others 1761: the Norman doorway at the south entrance dates from the nth century and its tympanum is enriched with carved work of interlaced rings: at the junction of the chancel and transept is a remarkable hagioscope, and in the chancel wall is a “leper’s window”: there are no monuments: the church was restored in 1873—4, at a cost of £900, when many relics of the former building were brought to light; the old pews were replaced by open seats and the carved woodwork of the roof carefully cleaned and preserved: a reredos of carved stone was erected in 1895 : there are 250 sittings: in the churchyard is a monolithic granite cross, 9 feet high and of great antiquity, and some tombs to the families of Lyle and Davey. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1690; marriages, 1691. The living is a vicarage consolidated with that of Gunwalloe, joint net yearly value £118, with residence, in the gift of Captain John Peverell Rogers R.A. and held since 1878 by the Rev. Joseph Chambers B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin, who resides at Gunwalloe. At White Cross is a United Free Methodist chapel, with sittings for 50 people, and a Wesleyan chapel holding 60 persons. The parish feast is on the nearest Sunday to the 2nd November, or to All Souls’ day. Bochym, the seat of Joshua Sydney Davey esq. J.P. stands near the high road from Helston to Lizard, about 5 miles from the former place; this estate appears in the Exchequer Domesday as “Buchent,” and was then held by Robert Count of Mortein, half-brother of William the Conqueror; during the Civil wars Bochym was a place of refuge for the Royalists, and there are still pointed out in the “oak room” secret staircases and sliding panels in the wainscot, but a portion of the building is of much more ancient date; the late Stephen Davey esq. father of the present owner, caused a thorough restoration to be made in accordance with plans and elevations found among the family papers; the house now occupies three sides of a square and consists of a centre and north wing, the other wing being formed by a large and handsome conservatory ; the house is panelled throughout, the library in Italian walnut, the dining room in oak, and there are many beautiful pieces of old carved oak furniture; in the dining-room is a four-fold screen of well-preserved hand needlework, representing twelve figure subjects; and the collection of china is both extensive and valuable, some of the examples of Dresden ware being unique: attached is a very complete model farm, managed upon thoroughly scientific and practical principless all the buildings comprised in it are most complete and were re-arranged by the present proprietor. The principal landowners are J. Sydney Davey esq. the trustees of the late Glynn Grylls esq. and H. P. Varley esq. The soil is exceedingly fertile, especially on the south; the subsoil is killas and greenstone, or hornblende rocks. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 2,845 acres, including 75 acres of water; rateable value, £3,268; the population in 1891 was 354.

National School (mixed), built in 1849, for 94 children; average attendance, 56; the infants’ school in connection is at Gunwalloe.
