Historical Description

DAVIDSTOW is a township and parish on the main Road from Launceston to Camelford and Wadebridge, 3 miles north-east from Camelford, 13 west from Launceston stations on the Great Western and London and South Western railways and 3 miles south from Otterham station, opened August, 1893, on the new branch of the latter railway from Launceston to Wadebridge, in the North Eastern division of the county, Lesnewth hundred and petty sessional division, Camelford union and county court district, rural deanery of Trigg Minor, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The rivers Camel and Inney have their source in this parish. The church of St. David, rebuilt on the site of the former church, is an edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch and a western tower of three stages, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells, the first two dated 1707, the third 1783 and the next two 1726: in 1875, Michael Williams esq. lay rector, presented three stained windows in memory of his father, Sir William Williams; his sister, Mrs. Hornby Buller, and the Hon. Ashley Carr-Glyn; as well as an organ and church plate; another stained window was given by Mrs. Pearce: the bells were rehung in 1881 and a treble added, raising the peal to six: the font is octagonal and of curious design: there are various memorials to the families of Bettenson, 1668—93; Pearse, 1638—1835; John Wills, gent, ob. 1647; Francis Nicholls esq. ob. 1674; Alse Muchell, ob. 1694; and Richard Martyn, ob. 1698: the church was restored in 1875, at a cost of £2,500, defrayed by Miss Pearse, of Launceston, in memory of her family, who had been landowners and inhabitants in the parish for many generations, and affords 1250 sittings: the churchyard was at the same time put in order by M. Williams esq. The register dates from the year 1709. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £129, with residence and 26 acres of glebe, in the gift of H.R.H. the Duke of Cornwall, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Richard Gazely Parker B.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. Here are Bible Christian and United Methodist Free Church chapels. St. Kitt’s hill, on the western side of the parish, is 985 feet above the level of the sea. The charities amount to £7 yearly. H.R.H. the Duke of Cornwall K.G. is lord of the manor. Miss Pearse, John Claude Daubuz esq. of Killiow Kea, Lieut.-Col. Shadwell Morley Grylls, of Lewarne House, St. Neot, and Capt. James Haye R.N. are chief landowners. The soil is light; the subsoil is rock. The chief crops are wheat, oats and roots. The area is 5,753 acres; rateable value, £3,763; the population in 1891 was 393.

A School Board of 5 members was formed November 26, 1874; William French, chairman to the board.
