Historical Description
EGLOSHAYLE is a township, village and parish on the river Camel, and bounded in part by the river Alan, half a mile south-east from Wadebridge station on the Great Western railway, 6 ½ north-west from Bodmin and 9 ½ north-west from Bodmin Road station, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Trigg, Bodmin union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The river Kestell, which flows near the village and empties itself into the Alan, affords good trout fishing, and in its lower reaches salmon and salmon peel are caught. The church, said to be named after St. Helie, a canonized Welsh sovereign, is a building of stone, in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, with modern additions; it was restored in 1867 at a cost of £1,600, and consists of chancel, with south or “Kestell” aisle, and organ chamber on the north side, nave of four bays, south aisle, north transept, south porch and a lofty embattled western tower 82 feet high, with crocketed pinnacles and containing a clock and 6 bells, recast by Rudhall, of Gloucester, in 1756: the dripstone of the entrance to the tower is ornamented with figures of angels bearing shields, one displaying the device of John Lovybond, c. 1461—75, and the other the presumed arms of the Kestell family : the south porch retains a holy water stoup : the font, of Norman date, consists of a square basin, with rudely arcaded sides, supported on a massive cylindrical base and on small shafts at the angles; it also bears an inscription now illegible: the stone pulpit of Perpendicular date has been enlarged and exhibits some curious details : in the tower are the remains of a monument to the Kestell family, originally erected in the Kestell aisle in 1581 by John Kestell, of Trevegon, and bearing dates from 1520 to 1578; three of the compartments are filled with inscriptions and the fourth has a shield of arms, and above is a quartered shield with crest and mantling under an arch; a filth compartment is lost: there are also memorials to Sir John Molesworth bart. ob. June, 1723, and Jane (Arscott), his wife, ob. May, 1719, and their family; to Barbara (Morice), wife of Sir John Molesworth bart. ob. 17 April, 1735; and to Sir Arscott Ourry Molesworth bart. ob. 23 Dec. 1823 : in the tower are monuments to the Rev. Henry Peers M.A. vicar, 1761—93, and to John Consett Peers, capt. R.N. ob. 11 Nov. 1798, and to the King and Carstairs families: on the external walls of the church, as well as in the churchyard, are many other memorials: in the churchyard stand the upper portions of two ancient crosses : there are 340 sittings. The registers date from the year 1600. The living is a vicarage, neb yearly value £293, including 27 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Truro, and held since 1891 by the Rev. George Durno M.A. of King’s College, Aberdeen. In the village is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1817 and rebuilt in 1824, and there is another at Washaway, built in 1836: there is also a Free Methodist chapel, erected about 1838, but since enlarged and holding 550 persons; and one at Sladesbridge, seating 100. Washaway Mission chapel, built in 1882 at a cost of about £600, will seat 80 persons. A cemetery was formed in 1857, from a portion of the glebe, under the provisions of the Act, 43 Geo. III. c. 108; originally a close of land, formerly called “Polgriggons,” but in 1894 it was enlarged in area. On the north side of the churchyard, next the gate, is an ancient cross, about 3 ½ feet high, with a round head, bearing a Maltese cross ; on the opposite side of the gate Is another stone, 3 feet high, with an elongated and rounded head, carved with a fleur-de-lis; at Washaway is the round head of another, embedded in a hedge by the roadside and bearing a fleur-de-lis. On the high Road from Wadebridge to Camelford, and at the point where the road from “Kelly Rounds” intersects it, stands “Three Hole Cross,” a monolith, 7 feet 4 inches in height, with a round head, which has a central boss and around it rude piercings, intended to form a Greek cross; three of these being more deeply sunk than the remaining one, have given this relic its current name. Of two ancient chapels once existing in the parish there is now no trace. Mr. John Pollard, of Egloshayle, left £200, the interest of which is divided between the poor and the Sunday school. Pencarrow, now the seat of Mrs. Richard Ford, standing in a hollow and surrounded by woods and plantations, was partly rebuilt by Sir John Molesworth bart. M.P. in 1765, and completed by his son, Sir William Molesworth bart. M.P. who also greatly improved the gardens and grounds; the former are laid out with terraces in the Italian style, and the latter contain many rare trees and shrubs; the mansion, which has three fronts, is plain, but substantial, and contains a valuable collection of pictures and articles of vertu and a magnificent library, including MS. copies of the Heralds’ Visitations of 1573 and 1620; it stands in grounds of 140 acres in extent, and at the top of the park is an earthwork, called “Pencarrow Castle,” consisting of three nearly concentric ramparts, each separated from the next by a deep fosse; the inner vallum incloses an area of 250 by 200 feet; the central one measures about 390 by 360 feet; and the exterior rampart, which is now incomplete, 520 by 600 feet. On the estate of Great Kelly is the ancient camp called “Kelly Rounds,” or “Castle Killibury,” of which portions only now remain; it originally consisted of two high concentric ramparts, separated by a deep fosse and strengthened by another on the outer side, the innermost vallum inclosing an area of 396 by 330 feet; other earthworks lie near which on the south-east formed a double barbican, and on the north-west a semicircular wall: some ancient roads also traverse the parish. Mrs. Ford (as representing the Molesworths) and John Tremayne esq. B.A. of Heligan, are the principal landowners. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners, in right of the See of Exeter, are lords of the manor of Bernere, or Burnayre, under an order in Council, 29 June, 1859. The manor of Pencarrow, anciently held by the Dynham and Stapledon families, was partitioned in the 14th century and further dismembered about 1590, and a portion only is now held by the Molesworths, who also own the manors or bartons of Pendavy and Overleigh: the manors of Treworder and Lamayle, or Lemail, and the barton of Croane belong to the family of Tremayne. The soil is light loam; subsoil, stone. The chief crops are wheat, berley, oats and roots. The area is 5,668 acres of land, 53 of water and 143 of foreshore; rateable value, £7,110; the population of the parish (including a portion of the town of Wadebridge) in 1891 was 1,368.
SLADES BRIDGE, half a mile south-east; WASHAWAY, 3 ¾ south-east; BODIEVE, 1 north-west; FORD, 2 ½ east, and GONVENA, 1 north-west, are places here.
This place is included in the United School Board district of St. Breock & Egloshayle. The children of this parish attend the board schools at Wadebridge.
School, Washaway (mixed), for 50 children.
