Historical Description
EGLOSKERRY, which derives its name from its church of St. Cyriacus, is a village and parish, bounded on the north by the county of Devon, 4 miles west from Launceston, with a station on the Launceston and Wadebridge section of the London and South Western railway, in the North Eastern division of the county, northern division of the hundred of East, petty sessional division of the north division of East, Launceston union and county court district, rural deanery of Trigg Major, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church, variously assigned to St. Cyriacus and St. Petrock, but also said to have been dedicated to SS. Ida and Lydy, September 14th, 1260, is an ancient building of stone, in the Early Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, north transept, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower 59 feet high, with pinnacles, and containing one bell; two other bells, it is said, were sold to North Petherwin about a century ago : there are monuments to the Speccott family, 1636—1705 ; to the Lethbridge family, 1833—61; and to the Rev. H. A. Simcoe, late vicar, Ann, his wife, 1840, and other members of his family; and various memorials of later date: the stained east window contains the Royal Arms, those of the Duchy of Cornwall and the national emblems : in the aisle are a helmet and gauntlets, and here also is an effigy in alabaster of an Italian flower girl: the font is of Norman date: the church was restored and reseated in 1887 at a cost of £1,000 ; during the restoration a carved stone representing the Agnus Dei was found built into the south wall, and is now placed over the south door: there are 235 sittings : in the churchyard is the tomb of William Erisey, ob. 1688. The register dates from the year 1576. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelry of Tremaine annexed, net yearly value £125, with residence and 11 acres of glebe, in the gift of Samuel Palmer Simcoe esq. and held since 1897 by the Rev. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. There is a charity of £2 12s. for bread to the poor, charged on the manor of Paris Garden, Christ Church, Blackfriars road, London, the property of E. G. Baron Lethbridge esq. J.P. of Tregeare; it was left by George Baron, formerly of this parish, who died in 1686, being then a merchant in Wood street, London; Mr. Baron also bequeathed £10 for preaching a sermon in the church every Sunday morning : in addition to the above there is a charity derived from the parish Hams or Marshes, the rents of which, amounting to £10 yearly, are applied to the repairs of the church; these lands were given by the Blanchminster family. At Tregeare is a Wesleyan chapel. This parish was taxed in Domesday Book, under the name of “Penheale,” a large manor extending over the whole of the parish and neighbourhood. The Manor House, in the occupation of Samuel Palmer Simcoe esq. is a building of granite ashlar, with embattled parapet, and is a fine example of an ancient manorial residence; some portion of the structure is attributed to the Grenvilles in the 16th century, but for the most part it was the work of Paul Speccott esq. ; the principal rooms, panelled with oak, display shields of arms and contain statues of distinguished literati, and the coffered ceilings and fine staircase window are also rich in heraldry; the grounds, covering an area of about three acres, contain fishponds and groves of chestnuts and oaks and a fine avenue of lime trees leads up to the house. The estate of Tregeare, belonging to Edward G. Baron Lethbridge esq. J.P. is partly in this parish and partly in that of Laneast. Samuel Palmer Simcoe esq. who is lord of the manor, Edward Galton Baron Lethbridge esq. of Tregeare, the representative of the late Professor J. C. Adams LL.D., M.A. of Cambridge, the trustees of the late George B. Marke esq. Ralph Baron Rogers esq. and Mr. Samuel Bate are the principal landowners. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 3,068 acres; rateable value, £2,874; the population in 1891 was 470.
National School, for 84 children; average attendance, 52.
