Historical Description

ST. FEOCK is a parish on the west side of the estuary called Carreg road, 5 miles south from Truro, in the Truro division of the county, western division of the hundred of Powder, petty sessional division of Powder West, Truro union and county court district, rural deanery of Powder, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. By an Order in Council, dated January 17, 1873, the district of St.John, Devoran, was separated from this parish, and created a distinct ecclesiastical parish. The church of St. Feoca is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, north transept, south porch and a detached western tower, with pyramidal roof, containing 3 bells : the chancel, separated from the nave by a low screen of alabaster, has a reredos of freestone, alabaster and gold, and coloured mosaic: the east and south windows in the chancel and the east window of the south aisle are stained: the monuments are modern : the church was almost entirely rebuilt about 1874, and has 346 sittings : it is said to have been the last church in which divine service was conducted in the Cornish language: the south entrance to the churchyard is through a lych gate, and over it is a room where parish meetings were formerly held: a lych gate of granite and oak was erected in 1893 to the memory of the Rev. Thomas Phillpotts M.A. for 30 years vicar of this parish (1844—74), and hon. canon of Truro, to whom there is also a brass tablet in the north aisle, erected by his widow, in 1890. The register dates from the year 1681. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £150, with residence and 5 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Truro, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Carl Friedrich Mermagen B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There is a Wesleyan chapel at Gonpiper, built in 1866, and another at Penpoll, erected in 1861, both places being 1 mile northwest. A reading room was erected in 1897, by public subscriptions, on a site held at a nominal rent from Colonel Tremayne, of Carclew. There are charities of £18 yearly value. At King Harry's passage is a steam ferry connecting the Roseland district with the city of Truro, a distance of 5 miles. Trelissick, the seat of Carew Davies Gilbert esq. D.L., J.P. is a mansion of stone in the Classic style, situated in the midst of well-wooded grounds and gardens of about 700 acres in extent, on the banks of the river Fal, 1 ½ miles north-east of the church. Adjoining Trelissick, and commanding a fine view of the Fal, is Penhale, the residence of the Hon. Mrs. Davies Gilbert. Near the church is Porthgwidden, the property of Mrs. Arthur Tremayne, of Carclew, and now (1897) occupied by Mrs. John Bolitho ; the mansion is a plain building of stone, with a tower at the south end, and is surrounded by pleasure grounds and gardens of about 20 acres in extent: these seats command extensive views of Falmouth harbour. 1 ½ miles north-west is Killiganoon, formerly the seat of the late Admiral Spry, now the property of and occupied by John Messer Bennetts esq. The Hon. John Richard de Clare Boscawen, who is lord of the manor, Carew Davies Gilbert esq. Col. Arthur Tremayne, of Carclew, Perranarworthal, and Lord Robartes and Francis Gilbert Enys esq. of Enys, St. Gluvias, are the chief landowners. The soil is a friable loam; the subsoil is argillaceous schist. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 3,765 acres (of which 675 are water); rateable value, £5,259; the population in 1891 was 641, exclusive of Devoran.

National School (mixed), for 160 children; average attendance, 34 boys, 26 girls & 26 infants; the school was renovated in 1892, at a cost of about £80.
