Historical Description
GORRAN, or St. Goran, is a parish and village on the coast of the English Channel, 8 ½ miles south from St. Austell station on the Great Western railway and 3 south-south-west from Mevagissey, in the Mid division of the county, east division of the hundred of Powder, petty sessional division of Powder East, St. Austell union and county court district, rural deanery of St. Austell, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Goran, erected in the 16th century, is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel and nave, unitedly of eight bays, south aisle extending along both, north transept, south porch and a lofty embattled western tower, with four pinnacles, built in 1606, and containing 6 bells, all cast in 1772; these have recently (1896) been completed and renovated at a cost of £150: there are two piscinae: the nave and aisle retain some good benches with well-carved ends, many of them bearing initials: there is an ancient monument in the nave to Richard Edgcumbe esq. of Bodrugan, ob. 1655, and a brass to William Algernon Slade-Gully M.A. d. 1870, with other modern memorials; some once existing here to the Trevanions have now disappeared: there are two stained windows and some fragments of old glass in the aisle: in the chancel stands a curious oak chair, elaborately carved at the back with the figure of a man and various emblems : the tower is a well-known sea mark and is a conspicuous object for many miles round : a new roof was erected in 1870, from designs by J. P. St. Aubyn esq. and in 1874—5 the body of the church was restored by the same architect at a cost of £1,154: there are 365 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1661; marriages, 1668. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £225, with residence and 1 acre of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Truro, and held since 1869 by the Rev. Charles Richard Sowell B.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. There is a Wesleyan chapel at High Lanes, recently (1879) restored at a cost of £300, and a Bible Christian chapel at Boswinger, and at Gorran Haven are Wesleyan and Congregational chapels. The “Deadman” (Scand. “clod,” a round-topped hill, and Celt. “maen,” a stone) is a bold headland, 379 feet in height, on the summit of which is placed the signal house of the coast guard. Trevennen is the residence of Stephen Henry Dickerson esq. The principal landowners are the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe L.L. who is lord of the manor, John Tremayne esq. of Heligan, St. Austell, John Charles Williams esq. of Caerhayes Castle, St. Michael Caerhayes, Mrs. Slade-Gully, William Cole Pendarves esq. of Pendarves, Camborne, and T. G. Graham esq. The soil is a rich loam; subsoil, killas and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 4,725 acres; rateable value, £5,456; the population in 1891 was 928.
TREVEOR, 1 mile south-west; TREVARRICK, 1 ¼ north-west; PENARE, 1 ½ south; RESCASSA, 1 ¾-west; TREGAVARAS, 1 ½ south-west, and BOSWINGER, 1 south, are hamlets.
About 1 mile south-east from the church is the village of GORRAN HAVEN, or, as it is sometimes called, PORTEAST. Here is an ancient chapel in the Late Tudor style, supposed to have been built by the Bodrugan family about the middle of the 15th century; it is a rectangular building of stone, with a curious and interesting pentagonal tower, and was restored in 1885, at a cost of nearly £600, under the direction of Mr. J. P. St. Aubyn, as honorary architect: the east window is the work of the Rev. W. Willimott M.A. vicar of Quethiock 1878—88 : the building has been conveyed by the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. Gorran Haven was, doubtless, at one time a place of some note, as may be inferred from its old pier, supposed to have been built by the Bodrugans, an ancient family who flourished in the reign of Edward II. but became extinct after the battle of Bosworth Field, August 21, 1485, when the greater part of the property was given to the Edgcumbes; the pier was rebuilt in 1888 by J. C. Williams esq. of Caerhayes Castle, at a cost of several thousand pounds. Bodrugan (the house on the down) is now a farm house, and Gorran Haven is known only as a small fishing place. Opposite the haven is the “Gwineas” rock.
A School Board of 5 members was formed July 6, 1876, with St. Michael Carhayes contributory with 2 members; Robert Henry Lanyon, clerk to the board; William Henry Michell, attendance officer.
Board School, built in 1880, at a cost of £1,600, for 190 children; average attendance, 38 boys, 36 girls & 36 infants.
