Historical Description
GRADE is a parish on the coast, 2 miles north-east from the Lizard, 10 south-south-east from Helston terminal station of a branch of the Great Western railway, and 18 south-west from Falmouth, in the Truro division of the county, hundred of Kerrier, petty sessional division of Kerrier West, Helston union and county court district, rural deanery of Kerrier, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Grade and the Holy Cross, rebuilt, with the exception of the tower, in 1862, is an edifice of stone in the Early Decorated style, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 3 bells, of which the first two are dated 1832 and 1618; the tenor has an inscription in Old English characters: the chancel has a piscina, sedile and credence table, and there are four stained windows, including the east window, given by the late rector, and several memorials to the Erisey family, formerly in the south aisle; one, reset and placed at the east end of the nave in 1862, being a large slab of Delabole stone, with brasses to James Erisey, ob. 17th October, 1522, and Margaret (Durant) his wife; this memorial includes effigies of both, the former being in plate armour over a hauberk; below are figures of 10 children and an inscription, and at the angles of the slab four shields of arms of a chevron between three escutcheons, each charged with a griffin segreant: the other monuments have been placed in the tower: in the churchyard is a tomb with arms to Hugh Mason, gent, d. 1671: there are 140 sittings. The register dates from the year 1707. The living is a rectory, with that of Ruan Elinor annexed, joint net yearly value £257, including 12 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of trustees, and held since 1888 by the Rev. John Jervis Mallock M.A. Exeter College, Oxford. The Catholic chapel of the Holy Cross, situated on the side of the valley at Cadgwith, is a small building of wood, erected by Charles H. Thursby esq. in 1895 : divine service is held regularly. St. Ruan’s well, about a quarter of a mile east of the church, is covered by a structure of granite, which has been restored; the water is beautifully clear, and in summer remarkably cool. Viscount Falmouth, who is lord of the manor, Lord Robartes and Joshua Sydney Davey esq. J.P. of Bochym, are the chief landowners. The soil is partly clay and partly loam, overlaying clay, greenstone, serpentine and horn-blende. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 1,981 acres; rateable value, £1,486; the population in 1891 was 293.
