Historical Description

HELLAND is a township and parish, bounded on the west and north by the river Camel, 3 miles north from Bodmin station on the Great Western railway, in the South Eastern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Trigg, union and county court district of Bodmin, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Helena is an ancient building of stone, in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle of four bays, extending along the whole of the chancel and part of the nave, south porch and a low western tower with pyramidal roof, containing 8 bells, added in 1888, at a cost, including the rebuilding of the tower, of £500: on the north side of the nave is a sort of a transept, built by the Rev. Francis J. Hext B.A. rector (1817—42), to serve as a school: the aisle has a priest’s doorway: the windows in this aisle retain some ancient glass, including the arms of Giffard and Raleigh, and sacred monograms: the font is a plain circular work of granite, set in the south wall: in the chancel is a memorial to the Rev. Francis John Hext M.A. rector, d. Jan. 22, 1842; and one with partially effaced inscription to Roger Squire M.A. rector (1602—32), and there are some modern memorials to the Kempthorne and Hooper families : in the south aisle is a floor slab, incised with the figure of a man in a long-sleeved gown, and inscribed to Humfrey, son and heir of Thomas Calwodley, ob. 16th century; on each side the head of the figure are the shields of Calwodley and Carminow, representing his marriage with Joan Carminow in 1493—4: the church plate consists of a modern chalice and paten of silver, given by the Rev. F. J. Hext: the church affords 175 sittings. The register dates from the year 1722. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £136, including 27 acres of glebt, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of the late Capt. John Morshead R.N. and held since 1890 by the Rev. Richard Goode Hutt. There is a Wesleyan chapel on the high road leading to Bodmin Road station, erected in 1878, and seating 90 persons. At. St. Mabyn, but in private grounds, stands a portion of an ancient cross, brought from Boconnion farm, in this parish, where it was in use as a door step; it consists of part of the shaft and the round head, which is carved with a Greek cross within a border. In this parish are two ancient earthworks, about a quarter of a mile distant from each other, on the high ground to the east of the river Alan; Lower Helland Castle, the northernmost of the two, is elliptical in form, and consists of a single rampart and ditch in a very perfect condition, the diameter being 300 feet in one direction and 260 in the other; Penhargard Castle, about a quarter of a mile west of the farm of that name, comprises three ramparts somewhat irregularly placed, but generally arranged in a circular form, and at several points from 12 to 15 feet in height. The old manor house of Penhargard, existing about 1815, and exhibiting much ornamental carved work, has been replaced by a modern house, in one of the windows of which is a shield of arms “arg. on a fess between 3 mullets, gu. 3 annulets of the field,” with two knights in armour as supporters, helm, mantling, and as a crest a “Sagittarius”; below is the date 1632. The greater portion of the manorial privileges of Helland Giffard or Over Helland, held in the 13th century by the Giffard family, and in the 15 th and 16th centuries by the Colyn, Calwodley and Arundell families, now belong to George Nickell esq. Lord Robartes is lord of the manor of Nether Helland, anciently held by the Coryton and Roscarrock families. The principal landowners are Lord Robartes, George Nickell esq. W. J. Penny esq. Mrs. Pomery, owner of Boconnion, also formerly a manor, and Henry H. Hooper esq. of Liskeard, owner of the barton of Penhargard, an ancient manor, but now dismembered. The soil is clay and marl; subsoil, clay and sand. The chief crops are oats and barley. The area is 2,475 acres; rateable value, £1,859; the population in 1891 was 190.

National School (mixed), for 43 children; average attendance, 22.
