Historical Description

In the Parish of Illogan lies Portreath or Basset's Cove, where a great deal of business is carried on in the import of coal and limestone, and the export of copper ore. This little port was originally improved by a company under a lease from the late Francis Basset, Esq. at an expense of at least 12,0001. About the year 1781, Lord de Dunstanville became the sole proprietor of all the shares, and after expending upwards of 30001. in extending and repairing the pier, granted a lease of the whole to Messrs. Foxes of Falmouth : these gentlemen have, at a great expense, improved the port to its present perfection.

The church of St. Illogan is a building of stone, with granite quoins, re-erected in 1848, in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches and an ancient embattled tower, with pinnacles, standing at some distance north-west of the church, and containing a clock and 6 bells, all recast in 1889 by Mears and Stainbank at the cost of Mrs. Basset, of Tehidy, in memory of her late husband, G. L. Basset esq. to whom a memorial window was also erected by public subscription at Easter, 1889: all the monuments formerly in the old church have been carefully refixed in the present structure, and include, on the east wall of the north aisle, a brass with effigies, inscription and figures of 10 children, to James Basset esq. ob. February 8th, 1603, and Jane (Godolphin), his wife, besides many later memorials to that family, one of which commemorates Francis, 1st and only baron de Dunstanville and Basset, who died February 14th, 1835, and has a bust by Richard Westmacott R.A.; there are various other memorials of modern date : the church affords 711 sittings: in the churchyard is an ancient granite cross, 5 feet high.
