Historical Description

JACOBSTOW is a township and parish, 9 miles south-south-west from Stratton, 10 north-east from Camelford, 13 ½ north-west from Launceston, 6 from Otterham and 6 from Tresmeer stations on the London and South Western railway, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and union of Stratton, Camelford county court district, rural deanery of Stratton, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. By the Local Government Board Order, No. 14,848, March 24th, 1884, a part of Jacobstow, near Higher Exe, was transferred to Week St. Mary, and Knowle Farm, Week St. Mary, added to Jacobstow. The church of St. James is an ancient building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower of granite, with pinnacles, and containing 6 bells, all recast in 1771: the rood stairs remain in the north wall: the panelled pulpit is formed of carved bench ends: the stone font, a very fine example of Transition Norman work, has a square basin with carved heads at the comers, and the sides are ornamented with passion flowers, encircled by serpents: in 1891 a stained window was inserted in the tower: the church was restored in 1887, at a cost of £792, and affords 250 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1653; marriages, 1656. The living is a rectory, net income £230, including 90 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of St. Germans, and held since 1865 by the Rev. Frederick Thomas Batchelor M.A. of Wadham College, Oxford, and J.P. Cornwall. Here is a chapel for Bible Christians, erected in 1893, and a Free Methodist chapel. Digory or Degory Wheare M.A. of Broadgates Hall (now Pembroke College), Oxford, an historical writer, first Camden Professor of History at Oxford, headmaster of Abingdon school, Berks, 1604—6, and principal of Gloucester Hall (now Worcester College), Oxford, from 1626, was born here in 1573, and died August 1, 1647. Fairs are held at Wainhouse Corner, on June 24, Monday before last Wednesday in July, September 29, November 5, and the Monday before Lady Day yearly, for bullocks, sheep and horses, and two small fairs are also held at Canworthy in this parish on the first Wednesday in June and September 18. The manorial rights are divided. The land is principally in the occupation of small owners. The soil is loam; the subsoil is clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 4,890 acres; rateable value, £2,294; and the population in 1891 was 375.

BLAGDON, half a mile south-east, DIMMA, 1 ½ north, LANGDON, 2 ½ south-by-east, and SOUTHCOTT, a quarter of a mile south, are hamlets of this parish.

A School Board of 7 members was formed Sept. 28, 1874; the Rev. F. T. Batchelor M.A., J.P. chairman & clerk to the board.

Board School (mixed), built in 1805, at a cost of £900, for 82 children; average attendance, 52.
