Historical Description

KEA, or St. Kea, formerly Landege, is a township and parish, bounded on the east by the estuary called Malpas Road, and intersected by the main roads from Truro to Falmouth and Redruth; it is about miles south from Truro and 8 ½ north from Falmouth, in the Truro division of the county, west division of the hundred of Powder, petty sessional division of Powder West, Truro union and county court district, rural deanery of Powder, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The Falmouth branch of the Great Western railway runs through the parish from Penwethers to Carnon, and there is a ferry at King Harry’s Passage. The old church of St. Kea, a very plain rectangular building of stone, which stood on the side of a hill, facing the east, was built in 1802 from designs by Mr. James Wyatt, but was pulled down in 1894 and the present church of All Hallows raised upon the site, at a cost of £4,500, and consecrated June 4th, 1896: the new church is in the Late Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, nave with north and south aisles of three bays, south transept and organ chamber, and a western tower surmounted by a copper spire and containing 3 bells, only one of which, however, is at present hung: there are various modern monuments which have been replaced : the silver gilt chalice and paten belonging to this church are of French workmanship and design, and are inscribed with the name of Renee d’Amboise, sister of Cardinal George d’Amboise, archbishop of Rouen in the 15th century; they date from the early part of the 16th century and were probably brought over to this country at the time of the pillage of French churches : the church contains a copy of a letter from King Charles I. written from his camp at Sudely Castle, September 10th, 1643, thanking the people of Cornwall for their services to the Crown, and also an ancient font: the oak stalls were given by J. C. Danbuz esq.: there are 288 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1701; marriages, 1756, and contains a terrier, dated 1727, referring to the old church and certain lands in the parish, and mentions the chalice and paten as gift of Madam Susannah Haweis. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £170, with 6 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Truro, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Gerald Pole-Carew M.A. of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. The tower of the old church, still standing in the churchyard of Old Kea, 3 miles east, is of three stages, with an embattled parapet and crocketed pinnacles, and was repaired in 1883: there is also a mission chapel adjoining, erected in 1862 and opened January 1st, 1863, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, south aisle and a turret containing one bell; it was enlarged in 1869, and has since been reseated and greatly improved: the east window is a memorial to Catherine Murray, d. 1857, and there are six other stained windows : the chapel affords 75 sittings: in the churchyard is the shaft of an ancient cross. There is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel and schoolroom at Porth Kea, and others at Penwethers and Coombe. At Cometo—Good, close to Penelewy, is a Friends’ meeting house, the oldest in Cornwall, and a Bible Christian chapel at Quenchwell. A charity left by John Lanyon, of Kea, produces £38 yearly; he was also the founder, in 1724, of almshouses, endowed with an estate in Gwennap, producing about £44 yearly; these are for 4 poor widows, each of whom receives 4s. weekly. In the district are several mines, the most famous in the parish being Wheal Jane, but none are at present working. Near to the church is Killiow, successively the seat of the Killiow, Vivian, Tredenham, Haweis and Gwatkin families; the mansion, which faces south-east, is built of granite from the parish of Mabe, and is now the property and residence of John Claude Daubuz esq. D.L., J.P. There were formerly mansions at Nanceavellan, Goodern, Sparnick and Carlyon: the last is said to be connected with the history of King Arthur’s time and to have been the original seat of the old Cornish family of that name; these estates are now the property of Viscours Falmouth and are occupied as farms. Viscount Falmouth is lord of the manor of Blanchland and principal landowner; Lord Robartes, John Claude Daubuz esq. Lord Clinton, Mrs. Cragoe, Messrs. Enys, Rashleigh, Gilbert, Tremayne, Hill and St. Aubyn, Messrs. Richard Magor and Richard Magor, jun. are also landowners. The soil in the east part of the parish is very fertile, but the greater part of the district west of the church has been reclaimed of late years from common, and has a clay subsoil with quartz spar near the surface. The chief crops are wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 6,038 acres; rateable value, £7,408; the population in 1831 was 2,103.

At CALENICK and at BISSOE (in the adjoining parish of Baldhu), 2 ¼ miles south-west, and neighbourhood are 7 or 8 tin streamers, or rather burrowers, for there is no mine at work in the district, but the burrows where mines have been yield sufficient tin to pay working; about 60 or 70 persons, chiefly women and children, are so employed.

CARNON, 2 miles south-west, PORTHKEA, 1 ½ miles east-south-east, CALENICK, three-quarters of a mile north-east, and COOMBE, a village, 2 ½ miles south-east, are hamlets.

SCHOOLS

A School Board of 5 members was formed August 13, 1875; Joseph Gill, Baldhu, clerk to the board & attendance officer.

Board, Kea (mixed), built in 1879, for 120 children; average attendance, 26 boys, 27 girls & 17 infants.

The National school at Higher Kea, built in 1849, is now used as a Sunday school in connection with the church.
