Historical Description
The little village of Lanwadnock is also a church-town, and a very romantic cove, near the Lizard Point, which is fast improving into a fishery, by the spirited and liberal proprietor of the lordship. . Cellars have been built, and the rocks excavated, in order to render the cove more commodious. Nothing can exceed the grandeur and beauty of the range of rocks for several miles to the right and left of the Lizard Point: they are entirely of the serpentine stone, in all its varieties.
At the Lizard Point there are two lighthouses, to warn vessels from coming too close to the shore. About a mile northwest of the Lizard Point is Kynance Cove.
LANDEWEDNACK is a parish, containing the village or town of THE LIZARD, and is 12 miles south-south-east from Helston terminal station of a branch of the Great Western railway, 22 miles from Falmouth and 20 south-west from Penryn, in the Truro division of the county, western division of the hundred of Kerrier, petty sessional division of Kerrier West, Helston union and county court district, rural deanery of Kerrier, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Lanty or St. Winwallow, supposed to have been connected with the Abbey of Landevenock, in Brittany, is a building of mixed serpentine and granite, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, north aisle, south transept, south porch and an embattled western tower, with four crocketed pinnacles, containing 3 bells, dedicated respectively to SS. Anna, Nicholas and Mary Magdalene: in the transept is a hagioscope, with lepers’ window: piscinae are found both in the chancel and transept: the south entrance is Norman, with chevron moulding, and is 9 feet in height: the porch is groined in stone: the font, of syenite, was made c. 1404, by Richard Bolham, a former rector: the pulpit and reading desk are of serpentine marble: there are four stained windows, one of which, known as “the lepers’ window,” is a memorial to Philip Vyvyan-Robinson esq. a former patron: in 1860 the church was restored and reseated with open benches, when the original stoup was discovered, and restored to its position in the south porch: there are 200 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1578 ; marriages, 1654; burials, 1653. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £190, with residence and 12 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Rev. Henry Vyvyan B.A. and held since 1889 by the Rev. Charles Shimmin Vyvyan, who is also rector of Ruan Major. There axe Wesleyan and Free Methodist chapels.
By the roadside in that part of the parish called “Cross Common” stands an ancient round-headed cross of stone.
The inhabitants of Landewednack are agriculturists, fishermen and serpentine ornament makers. Pilchards are caught in great abundance. The range of rocks east and west of The Lizard, the most southerly point of land in Great Britain, is exceedingly grand and picturesque. The name Lizard is supposed to be derived from “Lezard” or “Lazar,” the old term for leper ; great numbers of persons afflicted with this terrible disease formerly lived here, this peninsula being chosen for their residence on account of its isolated position. The Lizard serpentine, a beautiful marble of a dark green colour, variegated with veins of purple, white, Ted, scarlet and various other hues, is manufactured by the inhabitants into ornaments of various kinds, which are much sought after, and this industry contributes in a considerable degree to the support of the village. At the extreme point of The Lizard are two lighthouses built on the projecting rock; both are now fitted with electric lights on the combined Siemens’ and De Meriten systems; the Lanterns are placed 230 feet above high water mark and throw a light to a distance of 22 miles, through an are of 235° : they are on the holoptric system. Here is also a fog-signal of the type known as the “siren,” the most efficient yet invented. In connection with these lighthouses are dwellings for the engineer in charge and his staff of seven men, and likewise a smith’s shop and fitting room. A lifeboat, belonging to the National Life Boat Institution, is stationed at Polpear Cove and another at Church Cove, and a rocket apparatus at Cross Common.
At Beast or Bass Point is the important signal station belonging to “Lloyd’s”; from this station ships are communicated with by means of flags and a code of signals by day and pyrotechnic lights by night, and there is direct telegraphic communication with all parts; all vessels whether outward or homeward bound are spoken with here: there is also a coastguard signal station at Bass Point, connected by telephone with Porthleven to the east and Gillan Creek to the west. In the summer season The Lizard and neighbourhood are the resort of numbers of tourists. There are three excellent hotels and a reading room, erected in 1878, at a cost of £300, and under the management of a committee; visitors may become temporary members. A short distance from the Point and 1 ¼ miles west of Lizard village is the well-known Kynance Cove, one of the most wonderful features in the coast scenery of Cornwall: here innumerable rocks, of immense height, form themselves into arches and grottoes; and the bold black overhanging cliffs of the coast have a very grand and impressive appearance: in one of these is an immense chasm, into which, as the tide rises, the sea rushes with such impetuosity as to force the water out at an opening above, and the accompanying noise in the cavern resembles that of thunder; this rock is locally known as “the Devil’s Bellows”; in 1846 the Cove was visited by H.R.H. the Prince Consort and the Royal children. Penolver Point, surmounted by a pile of great rocks, and Housel Cove are both places deserving the notice of visitors ; the latter, being entirely free from dangerous under-currents, is a safe bathings place. Lord Robartes and Christopher Henry Thomas Hawkins esq. are lords of the manor, and Viscount Falmouth and the Lyle trustees are the chief landowners. The soil is partly clay and partly deep loam, resting on serpentine rock, decomposed hornblende and green stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips, which grow to great perfection. The area is 2,050 acres ; rateable value, £2,409; the population in 1891 was 626.
TRETHVAS, half a mile north, and CROSS COMMON, a quarter west, are hamlets. LIZARD is half a mile west, and THE LIZARD HEAD 1 mile south-west.
A School Board of 5 members was formed January 22, 1884, R. H. Richards, Lizard, clerk to the board.
