Historical Description

Lanhydroc, a fine seat, now belonging to Mrs. Bagnal Agar. It is a venerable mansion, and has been considerably improved. It is beautifully surrounded by a tinely-wooded park.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

LANHYDROCK is a township and parish near the high road from Bodmin to St. Austell, and on the river Fowey, 2 ½ miles south from Bodmin and 1 ½ west from Bodmin Road station on the Great Western railway, in the South Eastern division of the county, hundred of Pydar, petty sessional division of Powder Tywardreath, Bodmin union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Hydrock is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 8 bells, hung in 1888, in place of a single and very ancient bell: there is a window at the east end, erected by Nevil Norway esq. as a memorial to his wife, Judith Catherine Norway, d. 1848 : a slate tablet, with long inscriptions in Latin and English, commemorates George Carminow, ob. 1599, and Jane (Lower) his wife, ob. 1609; above are the arms of Carminow, with crest and supporters, and the Cornish motto, “Cala Rag Whethlow” (a straw for a talebearer) ; there are other memorials to Thomas Trenance, ob. 1596, and Joan his wife; and Lady Essex Speccot, ob. 1689, and a variety of modern monuments : in 1888 the church was thoroughly restored, at the sole cost of Lord Robartes; the roof, seats and fittings throughout are of oak, in a modern Perpendicular style: the stained east window was presented by the tenantry of the estate, and beneath it is a splendidly carved reredos of alabaster and Cornwall serpentine marble: in the churchyard is an ancient and elegant cross, about 8 feet high, with incised shaft, and a bold Maltese cross for the head: the church was restored in 1888 at a cost of £3,220, and has 192 sittings. The register dates from the year 1561. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £80, in the gift of Lord Robartes, and held since 1876 by the Rev. John James Glencross Every B.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge, and prebendary of Mornays in the collegiate church of Endellion (net yearly value £95). Lord Robartes, who is the lay rector, holds both great and small tithe; the vicarage house is held of Lord Robartes at a nominal rent. Trebyan Orphanage, founded by the late Lady Robartes, is devoted to the training of orphan girls as domestic servants; the principal cost of maintaining the institution being defrayed by Lord Robartes. Lanhydrock House, an ancient mansion of the Tudor period, formerly the seat of the Earls of Radnor of the first creation and now the seat of Lord Robartes D.L., J.P. stands in a well-wooded park of 200 acres, and nearly adjoining the church : the house was once quadrangular, but one of the late proprietors removed the eastern side, and the mansion now consists of a main frontage, with north and south wings, dated respectively 1636 and 1642, of considerable extent; a large space in front of the house, including the barbican, was some time since inclosed with a strong crenellated wall, and the whole laid out as a terraced garden. The barbican, formerly the principal entrance, is a battlemented structure of two stories, consisting of a central arched entrance, flanked by octagonal towers, the embattled parapets of which are decorated at the angles with pyramidal spirelets, tipped with balls; over the arch are the initials I.L.R. (John and Lucy Robartes) and the date, 1651: the south wing and central portion of the mansion were almost wholly destroyed by a disastrous fire on the night of the 4th April, 1881; the singular series of figures pendant from the ceilings, representing Scriptural events, and the collection of pictures, being for the most part saved from the flames. The rebuilding, carried out in 1883—4 under the direction of Richard Coad esq. architect, of London, has been completed in the same style as that of the destroyed work, a considerable addition to the house having been made on the southwest, inclosing a new courtyard with an area of 34 by 9 feet; the portions rebuilt or added include a billiard room, floored and panelled in oak and ceiled with enriched plaster work; this room has also a fine granite mantelpiece elaborately wrought, and adjoining is a smoking room: among other reconstructed apartments is the dining room, which is also panelled in oak, and has a fine chimney piece 11 feet high and 9 feet 6 inches wide, with three large recesses above the shelf: the old dining room at the extreme north-west angle is now the library: the morning room, which has an arched ceiling, communicates with the drawing room, a splendid chamber 64 feet in length, with parqueted floor, oak panelled walls, two handsome granite fireplaces and a ceiling enriched with pendants; next this is a prayer room, panelled in cedar: the entrance hall is fitted with panelled work saved from the fire, the frieze and ceiling being a reproduction of the old work; the inner hall has a flooring of Italian mosaic, and the staircase is of oak with rich balustrading; there is a servants’ hall 30 by 18 feet: the exterior walls are of local stone, and all the carving, both of stone and wood, was done on the spot: the mansion is supplied with water from a spring in the parish of Lanivet, about 2 ½ miles distant, conveyed to a reservoir on a hill at the back of the house, holding 75,000 gallons : the total cost of the rebuilding is estimated at about £80,000. Lord Robartes is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is loam; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats &c. The area is 1,756 acres; rateable value, £1,538; the population in 1891 was 192.

National School (mixed), built in 1840 & enlarged in 1893, for 100 children; average attendance, 85.
