Historical Description

LEZANT is a parish, bounded on the south by the river Inny and on the east by the Tamar, 4 ½ miles south from Launceston stations on the Great Western and London and South Western railways, in the North Eastern division of the county, northern division of the hundred of East, petty sessional division of East Middle, Launceston union and county court district, rural deanery of Trigg Major, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro.

The hamlets of Trewarlet and Bottonnett pay tithe in alternate years to this parish and South Petherwin. The church of St. Breoke, or St. Breage, is an ancient building of granite and freestone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel with aisles, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with octagonal battle-mented turrets and crocketed pinnacles, containing 6 bells: the chancel retains an ancient piscina and an aumbry, and there is a piscina in the south aisle: the rood stairs remain and an original pulpit hour-glass: there are monuments, including an altar tomb of carved slate, to the Trefusis family; memorials to John Mills and Johan, his wife, ob. 1573; and to Thomas Snell A.M. 30 years rector, ob. 1670; and others of modern date: the east window is a memorial to J. S. and Elizabeth Tregoning, 1883; the south window in the chancel is also a memorial to Thomas and Caroline Phillipps, erected in 1871: the church was restored in 1869, and has 222 sittings. The register dates from the year 1539. The living is a rectory, net income £409, including 158 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Truro, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Edward Townend M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, and hon. canon of Truro. There is a Wesleyan chapel, with cemetery, opened in 1819, at Trebullett, another, with cemetery, at Tregada, and a Free Methodist chapel at Treburley. The scenery of the district round Carthamartha, formerly belonging to the bishop of the diocese, but now the property of the Duke of Bedford, is fine. At Trecarrel, in this parish, are the ivy-clad remains of a large mansion, begun by Sir John Trecarrel, but never completed; it is stated that the stone used in the erection of Launceston church is that which had been prepared for this building. Landue, the seat of John Simmons Tregoning esq. J.P. is in this parish. The principal landowners are the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, Richard Carlyon Coode esq. of Polapit Tamar and J. S. Tregoning esq. The soil is light; subsoil, shelfy slate. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley and some pasture. The area is 4,713 acres; rateable value, £5,041; the population in 1891. was 680. REZARE, 2 miles south-east, TREBULLETT, 1 mile south-west, and TREKENNA, three-quarters of a mile south-east, are small villages; TREWARLET, three-quarters of a mile north-by-west, is a hamlet.

A School Board of 5 members was formed May 23, 1876; W. H. Cory, Dunheved road, Launceston, is clerk to the board.
