Historical Description
MABE, or St. Mabe, is a parish, watered by the small rivers Treliever and Argal, 4 miles west from Falmouth and 2 south-west from Penryn station on the Truro and Falmouth section of the Great Western railway, in the Truro division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of East Kerrier, Falmouth union and county court district, rural deanery of Carnmarth, archdeaconry of Cornwall, and diocese of Truro. The parish of Mabe (Old Eng. “son”) was at one time part of that of Mylor. The church of St. Mabe, situated on high ground, is an ancient edifice of granite, in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells, all cast in 1744 and recast in 1877: the church retains the rood stairs, an Easter sepulchre, a piscina, and sedilia: the south doorway is Norman, and has a plain square stoup: the church was damaged by lightning on the 4th February, 1866, and was thoroughly restored in 1868, at a cost of about £1,400, of which sum Miss Williams, of Falmouth, subscribed £1,000, and William Shilson esq. of Tremough, £100; at the restoration of the church some very interesting groups of figures carved in alabaster were discovered, which are now preserved at the Vicarage; the church plate includes an ancient silver chalice: there are 180 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £246, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Truro, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Ulric Collins Mason B.A. of University College, Durham. There are Wesleyan chapels at Trenoweth and Halvosso. William Rail esq. is impropriator of the great tithes. A rent-charge on land at Constantine of 12s. yearly, called “Tresahor money,” is distributed to poor widows. At Helland, in this parish, are the remains of a graveyard which, it is supposed, belonged originally to a religious house on this site. An interesting granite cross, and also an ancient font and stoup, are standing in the graveyard. Thirty-five acres of this parish are occupied by a reservoir, which is partly in Budock, for the supply of Penryn and Falmouth with water. Here are extensive granite quarries, which afford employment to a large portion of the inhabitants. Tremough, the property of Daniel Henry Shilson esq. is a mansion of granite, standing in about 20 acres of land, adjoining Penryn, but is at present unoccupied. Antron Hill, the seat of John Knill Kinsman esq. J.P. occupies about 31 acres of land, pleasantly situated about 500 feet above mean sea level: it commands extensive views of the Channel, harbour, and surrounding country. Messrs. Samuel James and William Rail, who are lords of the manor, the Rev. Sir Vyell Donnithorne Vyvyan bart. J.P. of Trelowarren, Daniel Henry Shilson esq. of St. Austell, Capt. Francis John Hext, of Tredethy, St. Mabyn, John Williams esq. the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, Francis Gilbert Enys esq. of Enys, St. Gluvias, Lieut.-Col. Arthur Staniforth Hext J.P. of Trenarren, St. Austell, William Medlin esq. Mr. James Bath and Mrs. Downing are the principal landowners. The soil is light loam and a stratum of granite. The chief crops are oats, turnips and roots; there is also a large extent of grass land. The area is 2,533 acres of land and 36 of water; rateable value, £3,915 ; the population in 1891 was 648.
National School (mixed), enlarged in 1872 at a cost of £85, for 170 children; average attendance, 50 boys, 46 girls & 50 infants.
