Historical Description

Marazion, or, as it is generally called, Market Jew, is a small town, about eight miles west of Helston, and 286 from London. It is built partly at the bottom, and partly on the side of a hill, which rises towards the north, sheltering the town from the cold winds. The town contains about 200 houses, and 1000 inhabitants. The parish-church, dedicated to St. Hilary, is about two miles distant; there is, however, a chapel of ease in the town, and a lecturer, supported by private subscription.

This place is said to have derived its name from having been much frequented by Jews, trading here several centuries ago, and who held an annual market for selling various commodities. In the reign of Queen Elizabeth it obtained a charter, vesting the government of the town in a mayor, eight aldermen, and twelve capital burgesses, with power to hold a weekly market and two annual fair-".

The situation of Marazion, and the mildness of the climate, occasions its being much visited by valetudinarians; and, indeed, if it were not for the frequent rains which fall in this part of the county, no spot could be found, either in Italy or the south of France, possessing a more mild, a more generally pleasing, or salubrious atmosphere.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

MARAZION, or Market Jew (i.e. Thursday market) (“quod ibi,” says Camden, “mercatus die Jovis habeatur”), is a town and large parish formed from that of St. Hilary, May 9, 1893, on a declivity on the coast, facing St. Michael’s Mount, 3 miles east from Penzance, 10 west from Helston, 1 east from Marazion Road station on the West Cornwall section of the Great Western railway and 312 from London by road and 325 by railway, in the Western division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of West Penwith, Penzance union and county court district, rural deanery of Penwith, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The town was burnt by the French in 1513 and again in 1549, during the Arundell rebellion in the reign of Henry VIII. In 1595, June 13, Queen Elizabeth granted it a charter, vesting the government in a mayor, eight burgesses and twelve capital burgesses, confirming hereby the the charter granted by Henry III. in 1257 for holding a weekly market and two annual fairs, but under the “Municipal Corporations Act, 1883” (46 and 47 Vic. cap. 18), the corporation was dissolved and the property belonging thereto was provisionally vested in the Charity Commissioners, by whose order the property is now administered by a committee consisting of four cooptative trustees and five others elected under the “Local Government Act , 1894,” by the parish council, and known under the title of the Marazion town trust, the late mayor being chairman and secretary. The insignia of the extinct corporation consist of two small and two great maces, a mayor's official staff and two seals: the two small and more ancient maces, 17 inches in length, are of silver with iron cores, and have banded shafts and inverted conical heads : the foot knop is ornamented with open scroll work, and has on the flat base a Tudor rose and the name of John Asie, mayor, 1596; there appears to be no doubt that these are the original maces provided on the incorporation by Queen Elizabeth: the large silver maces, 38 inches in length, form a pair, and are exactly similar ; they were purchased by the corporation in 1768, during the mayoralty of Humphrey Cole, and have massive shafts divided by boldly projecting bands and terminating in elegant foot knops; the heads, supported on open scroll brackets, are divided around into compartments by foliage, and exhibit the arms of the borough and an inscription, with the device of three vine leaves; above is a circlet and cresting from which spring the open arches of the crowns; on the shafts are inscribed the names of the burgesses and capital inhabitants at that date: the mayor’s staff is a bamboo wand, 40 inches long, with a silver head, bearing the name and arms of the borough and that of Francis St. Aubyn esq. mayor, 1684: the seals, of ivory and copper respectively, are identical in every respect, and display the town arms, a tower gateway, domed, with domical flanking towers, and surrounded by a legend.

Marazion is much visited by invalids on account of the mildness of its atmosphere, which is considered to approximate to that of Italy or the south of France; and standing as it does under the shelter of the hills and facing the south, it is peculiarly adapted for persons of weak constitution. The church of All Saints, formerly dedicated to St. Catherine, and rebuilt in 1861, at a cost of £2,900, exclusive of the site, is a structure of granite, in the Early Decorated style, consisting of apsidal chancel, lofty nave, aisles separated from the nave by arcades of four arches, vestry, north porch and a small turret on the western gable, containing one bell: the chancel is lighted by five windows, all of which are stained: memorial windows have been placed in the north aisle to Mrs. Cole, of this town, d. 1862; to Joseph Congdon and his wife, d. 1847; to Elizabeth, wife of Major-General J. A. B. Congdon, d. 1875 ; and Nicholas Bowden and his wife, d. 1865 ; and in the south aisle to William Cornish and his wife; the west window is a memorial to Richard Wellington, a metallurgist, murdered in Borneo, February 17, 1857; and there are others to John G. Cole, d. 1865, and to Jane, widow of the Rev. Samuel Cole D.D. d. 1862: the organ was erected and various additions made in 1882, and in 1891 the organ was enlarged and the interior of the church decorated: in 1896 a memorial window was placed to the late Mr. J. P. St. Aubyn, architect, who died in May, 1895, leaving a bequest of £1,000 towards the increase of the permanent endowment of the benefice: there are 430 sittings. The registers were formerly incorporated with those of St. Hilary, but since May 9, 1893, separate registers have been kept. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £189, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of St. Hilary, and held since 1883 by the Rev. James Frederick Lemon M.A. of Keble College, Oxford. Here are Bible Christian, Wesleyan and Free Methodist chapels. St. Thomas's Hall, in the centre of the town, is a substantial building of granite, erected in 1871. The fair is on the 29th September. The Institute, in the centre of the town, and erected in 1883 by Theophilus Cole esq. is a structure of granite and was presented by his widow and daughters to the parish in 1890 as a memorial to him: the site was given by T. W. Field esq. The principal trade consists in the importation of coal and manures. Charities, left by Leonard Millett, Miss Pascoe and others, producing £5 yearly, are distributed in flour and beef at Christmas to widows. The area is 595 acres; rateable value, £4,128; the population in 1891 was 1,342, exclusive of St. Michael’s Mount.
