Historical Description

MENHENIOT is a township, village and parish, having a station on the Great Western railway, 1 mile south from the village, 3 south-east from Liskeard and 261 from London, in the South Eastern division of the county, hundred of East, petty sessional division of West, union and county court district of Liskeard, rural deanery of East, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Antoninus is an ancient building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north and south porches and a western tower 45 feet high, with spire and containing 5 bells, all cast in 1739, except the second, which is dated 1842; in 1887 they were rehung and a new one added: in the chancel are remains of sedilia and a piscina: the west window of the south aisle is stained: on the floor of the nave, near the chancel steps, is an inscribed brass to Sir Ralph Carmynow kt. ob. 9 Oct. 1386; he was sheriff of the county in 1378—9 and M.P. for Cornwall in 1383, 1384 and 1386; according to the Visitation of 1620, he was killed while hunting; there are also memorials to. Augustine Question M.A. vicar, d. 1753; Lady Charlotte Carr, daughter of James, 14th Earl of Errol, d. 1801, and to her husband, Rev. W. H. Carr, vicar, d. 1836; to the family of Trelawny, 1653—1813; and to Lud. Stephens M.A. 40 years vicar, d. 1724: the font of Caen and Bath stone is octagonal: the pulpit, a memorial of Vice-Admiral Charles Trelawny Jago, d. 1891, is of oak, and contains a representation of his ship “Enterprise” in search of Sir John Franklin; the lectern, also of oak, has a statue of William of Wykeham, who was associated with this parish; both pulpit and lectern were made from trees off the estate of Coldrenick, by Hems and Sons, of Exeter: there are 420 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1554; marriages, 1536. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £430, including 22 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the rector and scholars of Exeter College, Oxford, by exchange in 1884, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Charles Edward Hammond M.A. formerly fellow of Exeter College, Oxford, honorary canon of Truro and rural dean of East. Here are Wesleyan and Free Methodist chapels. On the south side of the parish, and about a mile distant, is a rugged oblong mound, called “Clicker Tor,” composed of dark compact serpentine, a formation favourable to the growth of a peculiar species of heath, Erica Vagans, which was once found here, as well as at the Lizard. One mile further south is an ancient earthwork called “Blackaton Rings,” consisting of an irregular double vallum, extending over more than one acre. At Bolitho is a viaduct 113 feet high, and there are others at Trevido 101 feet, Cartuther 89 feet, and Coldrenick 134 feet; all these are on the Great Western railway, which traverses this parish. The Canon Martin charity amounts to about £37 yearly for a parish nurse, there are also two small educational charities amounting to £1 10s. yearly. Coldrenick is the seat of Major-General John Jago-Trelawny J.P. The manorial rights have been distributed. The principal landowners are Major-General J. Jago-Trelawny, the Rev. Charles R. Honey M.A. of Bournemouth, and Trehawke Kekewich esq. of Peamore, Exeter. The soil is loamy, with a stony bottom. The chief crops are grass, wheat, barley, oats &c. The area is 7,001 acres; rateable value, £9,966; the population in 1891 was 1,191.
