Historical Description

About six miles from Tregony is Mevagissy, a populous fishing town, on the western shores of St. Austel's Bay, chiefly inhabited by persons employed in the pilchard fishery, which has been very successfully prosecuted here. In 1769 the tythe of the fish taken amounted to 4851. 1s. 8d. Much business has been done here in the shipbuilding line; but upon the whole the town is not in an improving state. The church is a small building, at the north entrance of the town; the tower of which fell down some years ago, and is not yet rebuilt. Mevagissy is a vicarage, and in Liber Regis is valued 6l. 4s.

In the neighbourhood of Mevagissy is Heligan, the elegant residence of the Rev. Henry Hawkins Tremayne; the grounds are extremely fine, and the surrounding scenery very beautiful.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

MEVAGISSEY (anciently Lamarrack) is a seaport town, parish and township, situated on a fine bay, 3 miles south-south-west from the Black Head and 1 mile north-west by road from Chapel Point, 6 miles south from St. Austell, where is the nearest railway station, and 14 east from Truro; it is in the Mid division of the county, east division of the hundred of Powder, petty sessional division of Powder East, St. Austell union and county court district, rural deanery of St. Austell, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The very excellent natural harbour is safe and sheltered, and there are substantial quays: a new harbour was constructed in 1889—90 at a cost of £22,000, which added 10 ¼ acres of water to the existing 3 ½ acres, and greatly facilitated the ingress and egress of vessels at all states of the tide; this work was, however, unfortunately destroyed by the blizzard of March, 1891, and another harbour was constructed in 1897 at a cost of £32,000.

The pier, erected in 1770—3, has since been greatly improved. The town is lighted by electricity, supplied by a limited company. The church of St. Mewan and St. Issy, dating from an early period, and situated a little to the north-west of the town, is a plain building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisle and south transept; the lower portion only of the tower remains and contains one bell, dated 1684: at the east end of the chancel is a very fine mural monument to Lewis Dart esq. ob. 1632: there is also a tomb with effigies to Otwell Hill, ob. 1617, and Mary, his wife, and to the Carew family and others: there is a curious font of Norman date: the church was thoroughly restored in 1887—8, at a cost of £2,000, and has 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1598. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £140, including 23 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Truro, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Edward Mann Perry, of St. Aidan's. The Congregational chapel, rebuilt on the site of a former edifice in 1882, is in the Gothic style, and will seat 450 persons: the Wesleyan chapel, built in 1842, has 600 sittings: the Bible Christian chapel, built in 1826 and restored in 1880, seats 300: and the Free Methodist chapel, built in 1857, affords 250 sittings. A Cemetery of 2 acres was formed in 1882, at a cost of £400, and has a mortuary chapel; one half is consecrated, the remainder being assigned for the use of Dissenters; it is under the control of the Parish Council. The Conservative Club, in Cliff street, was opened in 1887, and the Liberal Club, on West wharf, in 1888. The market day is Saturday. A pleasure fair is held on St. Peter's day. Mevagissey Bay has been celebrated from time immemorial as an excellent fishing ground for pilchards; it is asserted that in the year 1724, 16,000 hogsheads were taken from this bay alone, but in later years the shoals of these fish have not been so large and the quantity caught is now less. The inhabitants depend almost wholly for subsistence on the fishery and other products of the sea. The Cornish Sardine Co. have a factory here for the preservation of sardines; there are also several other establishments for the curing of pilchards, and the method of curing introduced by Mr. Mathias Dunn, a resident, by pickling the fish in barrels instead of the old system of bulking, has given an impetus to the export trade. About 150 persons are employed here in preserving pilchards. The imports are coal, timber, salt and general merchandise; exports chiefly pilchards and pilchard oil. “Polpier,” the residence of Charles Grier esq. is an embattled mansion built in 1892 and overlooking the harbour and bay. The principal landowners are John Tremayne esq. of Heligan, who is lord of the manor, and John Charles Williams esq. of Caerhayes Castle. The soil is rich loam; subsoil, slate. The chief crops are barley and roots. The area is 1,260 acres; rateable value, £5,025; the population in 1891 was 2,200.

SCHOOLS

A School Board of 5 members was formed June 10, 1874; William Harris, Church street, clerk to the board & attendance officer.

Board (boys & girls), erected in 1874 for 360 children; average attendance, 146 boys & 150 girls.

Infants’, built in 1880 & enlarged in 1893, for 250 children; average attendance, 210.
