Historical Description

MINSTER is a parish 6 miles north from Camelford, with a station called “Camelford,” opened August, 1893, on the new branch of the London and South Western railway from Launceston to Wadebridge, and is 18 miles west-north-west from Launceston station on the Great Western railway, in the North Eastern division of the county, Lesnewth hundred and petty sessional division, Camelford union and county court district, rural deanery of Trigg Minor, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro: part of the town of Boscastle is in this parish. The church of St. Merthiana, situated in a picturesque and sequestered spot in a deep and thickly wooded valley, is a building of stone, in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, south aisle, south porch and a western tower, with saddle back roof, containing one bell, brought from Bodmin church and dated 1727: in the south aisle is a monument, with kneeling and other effigies and arms inscribed to John Hender esq. J.P. lord of the honour of Botreaux Castle, ob. 7 June, 1611; Jane (Thorne), his wife, and their family; in the lower panel are six English verses: against the north wall of the chancel is a fine monument in the Renaissance style, divided into two compartments by columns of black marble rising from brackets and supporting an entablature and semicircular pediment inclosing a quartered shield of arms; the inscriptions commemorate .Sir John Cotton kt. ob. 4 Feb. 1703, and Sarah (Fuljames), his wife, ob. 6 March, 1676: in the south aisle is a mural monument with kneeling effigies and shields of arms to William Cotton, precentor and canon of Exeter, and Elizabeth (Hender), his wife, ob. April and Sept. 1656: in the chancel is a brass with effigy and inscription to Hender Roberts, ob. 2 June, 1602, and there are other memorials to Roger Knight of Burstoke, gent. ob. 4 Nov. 1657; William Cotton esq. ob. 25 Dec. 1673; Elizabeth Eastbroke, widow, ob. 1686; Sir Jonathan Phillipps kt. ob. 12 Sept. 1798, Grace, his wife, and five children, 1744—89, and to the Moyse, Avery, Rundle and other families; there also remain two shields of arms in brass of the Hender and Molesworth families, belonging to a tombstone, now lost, to Catherine, wife of John Molesworth: there is an old oak chest, and in one of the windows some stained glass with the arms of Trelawney: there are traces of the rood loft staircase, now built up : the fine oak chancel screen disappeared about 1840, and some very good carved bench ends were removed, it is said, at the restoration of the church : the font, of porphyry, is Early English, and has a hemispherical basin ornamented on the outside with a fretted pattern: the communion plate includes two silver-gilt flagons, 1726—7; a chalice with cover, and a silver plate, given by Sir Jonathan Phillipps kt. in 1792: the church was enlarged or partly rebuilt in the 16th century, and thoroughly restored in 1869—71, under the direction of Mr. J. P. St. Aubyn, architect, and now affords 240 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1677; burials, 1678 ; marriages, 1681, but all are more or less defective. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £145, including 50 acres of glebe, in the gift of H. P. Leschallas esq. and held since 1895 by the Rev. Henry Mitchinson Coverley Price M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, who is also rector of Forrabury, and resides at Boscastle. The rector is lord of the manor of Polyphant in Lewannick, from which he is paid £4 yearly; he is also paid £13 14s. from the impropriate rent-charge of Altarnun. Near the church formerly stood the priory of Talkarne or Minster, founded as a cell to the abbey of St. Sergius of Anjou, by William Fitz Nicholas of Botreaux, temp. Henry II. and dedicated to St. Merthiana and St. Andrew: as an alien priory it was several times seized by the Crown on the occurrence of disputes with France, and seems to have ceased to exist in 1407, previous to the general dissolution of such houses in 1414—15. On Water Pit Down is the base of an ancient cross, referred to under Forrabury, and on the barton of Warthyvale, and about 200 yards from the bridge lies an ancient inscribed stone, conjectured to commemorate one of the chieftains who fell in an engagement here between King Arthur and his nephew, Mordred; it bears in rude characters the words “H(I)C IACIT FILIUS MACARI.” Here was Botreaux Castle, the seat of the ancient and noble family of that name, settled here before the reign of Henry II. William de Botreaux, the eighth of that name, was created a baron by writ of summons, 42 Edw. III. (1368) ; his descendant of the same name, and the last male heir, died 15th May, 1462, leaving an only daughter, Margaret, who married Sir Robert Hungerford, and his barony consequently passed to that family, and after remaining with other baronies, for some time in abeyance, was revived 7th Nov. 1871, in favour of Edith Maud (Abney-Hastings), Countess of Loudoun: in 1812 some portions of the fabric were dug out of the site of the castle, which occupies the spur of a hill at the junction of two ravines, but is commanded on three sides by the hilly ground adjacent. Phillipps’ charity, founded by Sir Jonathan Phillips kt. above mentioned, produces £5 yearly, which is distributed at Christmas to poor persons of the parishes of Forrabury and Minster. H. P. Leschallas esq. is lord of the manor, and Col. William Sloggatt Hawker, of Penally, Boscastle; Arthur Wade esq. of Boscastle; J. C. Danibuz esq. of Truro, and the trustees of the late Richard Spry esq. are chief landowners. The soil is dark loam; the subsoil is rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 3,145 acres; rateable value, £2,478; the population in 1891 was 368.

This place is included in the United School Bard district of Boscastle, formed Feb. 17, 1875.

Board School, erected in 1879, at a cost of £500, the old National school built in 1843 being also used; the schools will hold 180 children; average attendance, 35 boys, 42 girls & 28 infants.
