Historical Description

The road through Mullion Church Town passes through a pleasing and well-cultivated country; picturesque, from being finely broken into hill and dale, and well wooded. This "Church Town" is very small, and has nothing to recommend it to the notice of the traveller. The inhabitants are chiefly fishermen; and at Mullion Cove, about three miles from the town, there is a pilchard fishery, of about tour seans, which has been very successful, and is in an improving state. Between Mullion and Landwadnok are the Goonhilly Downs, over which is the nearest road.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

MULLION is a parish, on the coast of the English Channel, 5 miles north of the Lizard and 7 south-southeast from Helston station on a branch of the Great Western railway, in the Truro division of the county, hundred of Kerrier, petty sessional division of Kerrier West, union and county court district of Helston, rural deanery of Kerrier, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Melan is a large building of local stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 4 bells, all cast in 1828 : the present tower was erected in 1500, by Robert Luddra, then vicar, on the site of a former structure, of which some traces still remain, consisting chiefly of the tower arch and a stone crucifix inserted in the west wall: the benches are of carved oak and for execution and variety of design are unequalled in the county; many of them were found during the course of the restorations carried out during the years 1878—83: the stained east window is in part filled with ancient glass: in the north chancel aisle is a memorial window to Frank, second son of the late G. S. Brinton esq. of Southampton, who was drowned off this coast, 7th February, 1869; and there is another at the east end of the north aisle to the late Lord Robartes, d. March 9th, 1882, erected by his successor: there are inscriptions to the family of Flavel, 1682—9, and others of modern date: the church affords 150 sittings: the churchyard is entered by a lych-gate. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1598 ; marriages, 1621. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £130, with residence and 1 ½ acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Truro, and held since 1890 by the Rev. James Henry Scholefield M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. Here are Wesleyan and United Methodist chapels. The parish feast is held on the nearest Sunday to November 6th. At Predannack is a round-headed monolith, 5 feet 3 inches in height and 2 feet wide, with a plain Latin cross carved on each side; it stands near the site of an ancient chapel; on Predannack Downs are some barrows and various inferior encampments, locally termed “robins.” There is a golf club, with suitable links, and a pavilion at Pol-du-Cove. Lord Robartes and Viscount Falmouth are the chief landowners. The soil is marl and some clay, resting on serpentine Tock. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 5,015 acres; rateable value, £3,265 ; the population in 1891 was 666.

PREDANNACK is a hamlet, 2 miles south.

TREWOON is a quarter of a mile north-east and MEAVER half a mile cast.

A School (Board of 5 members was formed 31 May, 1872; G. Williams, clerk to the board; William George, attendance officer.

Board School (mixed), built in 1834 & enlarged in 1872, for 150 children; average attendance, 30 boys, 36 girls, & 26 infants.
