Historical Description
NEWQUAY, anciently “Towan Blistra,” is a thriving seaport town and fashionable and much frequented watering-place on the north coast, with a station on a branch of the Great Western (Cornwall Minerals) railway, which was opened for passenger traffic in 1876, and 14 miles north from Truro station, on the Great Western railway, 8 south-west from St. Columb Major and 303 ½ from London, and is a parish in the Mid division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Pydar, union and county court district of St. Columb. The town is governed by an Urban District Council of nine members, formed under the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 & 57 Viet. c-73), which supersedes the Local Board formed 1868, and it is lighted with gas by a company, from works near the Railway station, erected at a cost of about £4,000. Water works for the town have been constructed by a company under an Act of Parliament, at a cost of £10,000, the supply being obtained from Halloon, near St. Columb Road station. The drainage for the Tolcarne Head portion of the district, formerly discharged into the sea, has been entirely diverted, at a cost of £1,100, into the river Gannell, and the drainage of Newquay has been conducted some distance out to sea into deep water, at a cost of £3,000. so that the sea-bathing may not be interrupted. The cliff scenery here is extremely picturesque and grand, and the fine sandy beach, two miles long and half a mile wide, tends to make this place a favourite resort. The church of St. Michael was built in 1857, and enlarged in 1873 by the addition of a north aisle, and the extension of the west end, and again enlarged in 1881 at a cost of £900, when a south aisle, organ chamber and vestry room were added at a cost of £576; it now consists of chancel, nave, aisles, vestry and a turret containing one bell: there are sittings for 600 persons. The church is served by the clergy of St. Columb Minor. The Baptist chapel, built in 1822, will seat 150 persons; the Free Methodist chapel, built in 1866, has 300 sittings, and the Wesleyan chapel, built in 1852, 450 sittings. The Congregational chapel, Fore street, erected in 1888, at a cost of £1,000, is a building of stone in the Early English style, seating 240 persons; the Bible Christian chapel, Deer Park, will seat 100 persons. The Cemetery, consisting of half an acre, given by H.R.H. the Duke of Cornwall K.G. was formed in 1874, and is under the control of the urban district council acting as the burial board. The lecture hall, formerly a Congregational chapel, is used for public purposes, and will hold 200 persons. The Oddfellows’ hall, Trenance road, will seat 250 persons, and the Freemasons’ hall was erected in 1880 at a cost of £250.
The harbour, an artificial work, with piers, originally constructed by a Mr. Lomax, was reconstructed by J. T. Treffry esq. and in 1874 the Cornwall Minerals Railway and Harbour Company erected a jetty; the harbour admits vessels of 250 tons, and the railway is held and worked by the Great Western Railway Company under lease. The north pier was much damaged on the 20th March, 1889, by a furious gale from the N.E. with a heavy sea, which washed away 100 feet of the structure. The chief exports are iron and other ores, china clay, granite, fish and grain; the imports are coals, salt and manures. About half a mile from the town is a beautiful valley, called “Trenance,” leading to the estuary of the Gannell, which flows into the sea at Crantock bay. The Atlantic hotel, erected in 1893 on the Towan Head, and the property of the Cornish Hotels Co. Limited, is a handsome building of stone, standing in its own grounds of over five acres in extent, and from its elevated position commands an uninterrupted ocean view from every window : the large coffee room, drawing, reading, billiard and smoking rooms are noble apartments; the main hall is very spacious and contains a fine fire-proof staircase reaching to each floor: in all there are over one hundred apartments in the building; Frederick Rickard, sec. The coastguard here consists of one divisional officer, one chief boatman in charge, and 5 men. The lifeboat, “Willie Rogers,” stationed here in 1893, was presented by W. Rogers esq. and is supported by voluntary contributions; William Henry Thomas is hon. sec. to the Lifeboat Fund. “The Tower,” the seat of the Dowager Lady Molesworth, erected about 1835, is a building of stone in the Tudor style, commanding views of the sea and headland: attached to the house is a Catholic chapel, to which the public are admitted whenever service is held. Charles Ebenezer Treffry esq. of Place House, Fowey, is lord of the manor of Newquay. Rateable value, £9,861; the population in 1891 was 1,891.
