Historical Description

NORTH HILL is a parish and pleasant village on the river Lynher and near the Launceston and Liskeard Road, 7 miles south-west from Launceston stations on the Great Western and London and South Western railways, and 10 north from Liskeard, in the North Eastern division of the county, north division of the hundred of East, petty sessional division of East North, Launceston union and county court district, rural deanery of Trigg Major, archdeaconry of Bodmin, and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Torney is an ancient building of granite in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch, with fine groined roof of granite and parvise, and an embattled western tower with crocketed pinnacles, containing 6 bells: there is an elaborately ornamented altar-tomb of slate, with effigies to Thomas Vyncents gent, of Battens, ob. 1606, and Jane, his wife, ob. 1601, and fifteen children, besides figures of Death and of Our Lord, and Latin inscriptions: there are other monuments to the Spoures, once the owners of Trebartha, 1603—1712; and to the family of Rodd, of the same place, 1736—1859: the reredos and sedilia are memorials to the Rodd family: the chancel retains an ancient piscina and part of a hagioscope, and has three stained windows to the Rodd family: the chancel was restored by the Rev. C. Rodd, late rector, and the exterior of the church in 1892, at a cost of £350, and in 1897 it was reseated with benches of carved oak and will now seat 400 persons. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1621; marriages, 1555; burials, 1630. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £391, including 62 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1885 by the Rev. Theophilus Willing. There are Wesleyan chapels at Coad’s Green and in the village, and a Bible Christian chapel at Middlewood. Kilmar granite quarry, about two miles west from the church, furnished large quantities of granite for the building ol Westminster Bridge, but is not now worked: near Berrio Bridge is an unworked copper mine. Allabury, on Hawks Tor, is the site of a Roman camp, and in the valley half a mile below the church, there is a so-called “holywell.” Trebartha Hall, the seat of Francis Rashleigh Rodd esq. D.L., J.P. lord of the manor and chief landowner, one mile north-west from the church, is situated on the banks of the Lynher; the Tors, the wood, and a romantic waterfall, combine to make the scenery here very beautiful. The soil is light; the subsoil granite and slate. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, turnips, mangold wurtzel and grass. The area is 7,546 acres; rateable value, £6,240; the population in 1891 was 971.

The chief villages are: COAD'S GREEN, 2 miles east, where there is a Wesleyan chapel; ILLAND, 2 northeast ; TREBARTHA, 1 mile north-west; BATH POOL, 1 ½ south-east, where there is a bridge of four arches over the Lynher; and CONGDON’S SHOP, 1 ¾ north.
