Historical Description
NORTH TAMERTON is a small parish bounded on the east and north by the county of Devon, 5 miles south-by-west from Holsworthy, which is the nearest railway station, and 10 miles north-by-east from Launceston, in the North Eastern division of the county, Stratton hundred and petty sessional division, Holsworthy (Devon) union and county court district, rural deanery of Trigg Major, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro ; a portion of this parish east of the Tamar was annexed to Cornwall by the Acts 2 and 3 William IV. cap. 64 (1832), and 7 and 8 Victoria, cap. 61 (1844). The church of St. Denis, supposed to have been built early in the 15th century, is an ancient building of granite and stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, south aisle, south porch and a fine embattled western tower 90 feet high, inclusive of the pinnacles, and containing 6 bells: many of the bench ends are of ancient carved oak: the north window in the chancel is stained: the south aisle retains a piscina, and there is a font of the same date as the church: on the wall at the east end of the north aisle is a brass inscribed as follows:-“Here lyeth Leonard Loves of Ogbeare, Esquyer, who dyed the fortynth Daye of Apryll, Anno D.M. 1576, General Receaver to ye Quene's Maiestie of all hir Revenewes in the Counties of Devon and Cornwall”: the church was restored in 1875, and later at a cost of £900, and affords 262 sittings. The register dates from the year 1556. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £156, with residence and 14 ½ acres of glebe, in the gift of J. Hockin esq. and Major Holt alternately, and held since 1850 by the Rev. Richard Chamberlain Smith M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. Ogbeare Hall, the property and residence of Major Joseph Holt J.P. of Farnborough, Hants, is a mansion dating from the early part of the 15th century; it has been, restored and enlarged, and contains a very fine old banqueting hall, 30 feet high, and an entrance hall, both with elaborately carved oak roofs in excellent preservation: it was occupied in the time of Queen Elizabeth by Leonard Loves, Mer Majesty’s treasurer for the counties of Devon and Cornwall, whose brass is mentioned above. The principal landowners are Major Joseph Holt, Messrs. Dingley, Pethybridge and Co. bankers, of Launceston, Mrs. Ford and William Bray esq. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 5,261 acres; rateable value, £2,376. The parish contained in 1891 a scattered population of 430.
A School Board of 5 members was formed February 5, 1875 ; this parish contributes two members to the Boyton & Northcott school board; Rev. R. C. Smith, chairman & clerk to the board.
