Historical Description

Padstow, on the river Camel, was originally called Petrocstow, derived from Petrocus, a British hermit, who resided here in his cell. It is distant from London 242 miles, incorporated and governed by a mayor and other officers.

Padstow is a seaport town, on the northern coast, in the hundred of Pyder, and the harbour is thought the best upon the north coast, although it suffers the same inconvenience with the rest, of being much obstructed by the sand, which renders the navigation very difficult, except in its very channel; where, however, the water is deep enough for ships of considerable burthen. A handsome stone bridge, of 17 arches, at Wade bridge, is entitled to the traveller's notice. Which crosses the river Camel, was erected, about the year 1485, through the public-spirited exertions of the then Vicar of Eglesheyl, of the name of Lovebon or Lonybound. Before that period passengers had to cross the river by a ferry and dangerous ford, frequently interrupted by sudden inundations.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

PADSTOW (i.e. Petrocstow) is a market town and seaport, on the estuary of the rivers Camel and Alan, and bounded on the north by about 3 miles of cliff, open to the North Channel, and on the east and south-east by about 4 miles of cliff and beach; it is 8 miles west-northwest from Wadebridge station on the Great Western railway, 44 from Plymouth, 243 from London, 8 north from St. Columb and 16 west-north-west from Bodmin; the parish is in the Mid division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Pyder, St. Columb union and county court district, rural deanery of Pyder, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. An extension of the main line of the London and South Western railway from Launceston to Wadebridge, and thence to Padstow, was begun in July, 1884, but is only now (1897) completed as far as Wadebridge. In 1583, the 25th year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth, Padstow was incorporated by Royal Charter, dated 26th February, by the title of “The Mayor and Burgesses of the Borough of Padstow”; but in what year it ceased to be a corporation is not known: the government of the town, formerly vested in a Local Board, formed 1864, is now, under the provisions of the Local Government Act of 1894 (56 and 57 Viet. c. 73), in the hands of an Urban District Council of 9 members. The town is well lighted with gag by a company formed in 1868, the works being in Church Lane. The harbour was deepened and the piers rebuilt about 1854, under the provisions of an Act for improving the port and harbour, passed May 23, 1844. The port of Padstow extends from the Castle Rock in the parish of Perran-Zabuloe, being the north-eastern limit of the port of Penzance, to Dazard Point in the parish of St. Gennys, which is the southern limit of the port of Barnstaple. Padstow, in the “Cornu-British” tongue, is said to have been called “Lodenek”; in the visitation of the Bishops of Winchester and Lincoln, in 1291, it is described as “Aldestowe’ ; in 1326 a Royal Order was addressed to Aldestowe, among other places in Cornwall; in 1401, an order was addressed to Padlystowe and two other places, about building a Balangerd.

The town furnished two vessels and men to Edward III. for the siege of Calais. The church of St. Petrock is an interesting building of stone, in the Late Decorated style, consisting of chancel with aisles, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: there are two piscinae, one of which bears a figure of St. Petroc, and the rood stairs also remain : the font of Catacluse stone is very curious, and has arcaded sides and sculptured effigies of the 12 apostles: there is a monument to Sir Nicholas Prideaux kt. ob. 1637, erected by his wife in West Putford church and removed here about the year 1732, and a brass with Latin inscription to Laurence Merther, vicar of Padstow, ob.19th June,1421: most of the windows are stained, and include memorials to William Rawlings, 50 years vicar; and Richard Tyacke, vicar, 1836: at the west end, connected with the tower, is the vault of the Prideaux-Brune family, surrounded by an embattled wall of masonry, and over the entrance thereto is an old stone cross, discovered in the grounds of Prideaux Place: the church was restored and richly ornamented, at a considerable expense, principally defrayed by Miss Mary Prideaux-Brune, of Prideaux Place, about 1855 : in 1888—9, the chancel was completely restored, under the direction of Mr. J. D. Sedding, architect, when it was repaved, the sanctuary and vestry enlarged and the communion table and reredos raised, choir stalls of oak, carved by Mr. H. Hems, of Exeter, and brass communion rails were erected, and the organ moved from the west end to the north chancel aisle; at the same time the nave seats were lowered and widened; there are 800 sittings. The registers of baptisms dates from the year 1611; marriages and burials, 1599. The living is a discharged vicarage, net income £160, including 18 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Charles G. Prideaux-Brune esq. and held since 1896 by the Rev. Edmund Fredk. Nugent M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. The Bible Christian chapel, erected in 1840, has 200 sittings, and the Wesleyan chapel, built in 1827, will seat 600 persons. A Cemetery of 2 acres was formed in 1881 at a cost of £800, and is under the control of a Burial Board of 5 members. A monastery was founded here A.D. 520 by St. Petroc, but in 997 the place was destroyed by the Danes and the community was then transferred to Bodmin. Before the Reformation there were in existence here nine chapels or oratories, two of which were dedicated to St. Cadoc and St. Sampson; the site of the latter now forms part of the grounds of Prideaux Place, and some remains of St. Saviour’s chapel also exist on the brow of the hill: attached to these chapels were cemeteries of considerable extent. In 1632, Nicholas Watts gave some property to the poor of Padstow, to commemorate which a funeral peal is rung every year on the 1st of September, for which the bell ringers receive 12s.: in 1635, Malachi Martyn gave by will the sum of £2 ; and in 1711, William Swymmer gave some land by deed, which, together, produce about £80 yearly, and this sum is distributed among such poor persons as are not receiving parochial relief: these charities are regulated by a scheme of the Court of Chancery dated February 26th, 1859, under which almshouses were erected in 1875, in Middle street, at a cost of £1,000, for 8 single women of the second poor, each of whom receives in addition £10 a year. The public rooms are in Church lane, and will hold 300 persons. The members of St. Petroc’s Masonic Lodge hold meetings at their hall, in Church street, on the first Tuesday in each month. Padstow Institute is a building of red brick in the Decorated style, erected at a cost of £1,000, raised chiefly by subscription: it contains a concert hall, billiard, recreation and reading rooms and has a library of 400 vols. The Padstow Harbour Association was formed in 1829, for the purpose of saving life and property by rendering assistance to ships entering the port in distress; it is supported voluntarily, and no salvage claims are made other than expenses out of pocket; up to the year 1888 this institution had rendered aid to not less than 86 vessels. A branch of the Royal National Life Boat Institution is also located here, and the lifeboat has been instrumental in saving the lives of many shipwrecked crews: a new lifeboat was presented in 1883 by R. A. B. Preston esq. in gratitude for his rescue when wrecked on the Goodwins: a steam lifeboat is now (1897) being built for this port. Stepper Point, a headland forming the western boundary of the harbour and 227 feet in height, has a daymark, a capstan for the use of shipping and is provided with the Board of Trade rocket apparatus; within the headland is the Doom Bar, an immense sandbank, rich in sand containing carbonate of lime, of which it is said to contain 80 per cent, and large quantities of the sand are sent inland. The town has a considerable import trade in general merchandise, and in the exportation of corn; ship building, which was formerly carried on here to a large extent, has much declined, repairs forming the principal operations, The market day is Saturday. A fair for cattle, sheep and horses is held on the first Tuesday in May. A festivity or pastime called “The Hobby Horse ’’ is celebrated every May day. On Dennis hill is a granite monument, 50 feet in height, erected in 1889, by the late Rev. Saml. Paynter M.A. of London, and some time rector of Stokenext-Guildford, Surrey, at a cost of £500, in commemoration of H. M. the Queen’s Jubilee in 1887. Prideaux Place, the residence of Charles Glynn Prideaux-Brune esq. D.L., J.P. which occupies the site of the ancient monastery, is a noble edifice of the Elizabethan period, standing in grounds of about 4 acres ; the house, built by Nicholas Prideaux in 1590, affords an extensive diversified view overlooking the town and the serpentine harbour; among the ancestral portraits in the house are those of Mr. Nicholas Prideaux, in the costume of the period, and of the celebrated Humphrey Prideaux D.D. dean of Norwich, who was born here 3 May, 1648, and died Nov. 1, 1724. C. G. Prideaux-Brune esq. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay. The land is chiefly arable, and produces corn of excellent quality. The area is 3,339 acres of land, 338 of tidal water and 246 of foreshore; rateable value, £7,390; the population of the parish in, 1891 was 1,877, and within the Urban district, 1,559.
