Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
PAR is a sea-port in Tywardreath Bay, and an ecclesiastical parish, formed January 20th, 1846, from portions of the parishes of St. Blazey and Tywardreath, with a junction station on the Great Western railway ; it is 1 mile south of St. Blazey, 4 east of St. Austell, 35 from Plymouth and 281 ¾ from London. The parish contains the villages of Biscovey St. Mary’s or St. Blazey Gate, St. Blazey Highway, and other hamlets ; it is in the South Eastern division of the county, western division of the hundred of Powder, petty sessional division of Powder Tywardreath, union and county court district of St. Austell, rural deanery of St. Austell, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. Par is a thriving port, and owes its origin as such entirely to the perseverance of the late J. T. Treffry esq. who constructed the breakwater and quays, and converted this place from an open bay into a safe port, and connected it with the mines by railways and canals, undertakings which have since been further developed by his trustees ; it is now an important shipping place for china-clay, stone and granite; the imports being coal, timber and general merchandise. The Great Western railway connects the harbour of Newquay on the north with those of Par and Fowey on the south coast, thus opening communication with the various china-clay and china-stone works, tin, copper and iron mines, and the granite districts of the interior, a branch line being also extended to the extensive iron lodes in the Per-ran district. The whole of the mines in the district are now (1897) closed, but the export of china-clay and china-stone is rapidly expanding. The parish is supplied with water by the Par Waterworks Co. The town is lighted by oil lamps. The church of St. Mary, situated at Biscovey, about 1 ½ miles from Par junction, was built in 1849 from the designs of the late G. E. Street esq. R.A. being the first church erected by him; it is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and a western tower with spire containing one bell: in the chancel are eleven small stained windows; there is also a memorial window to the Rev. Frank Garrett M.A. vicar 1872—85 : an organ was built in 1887 by general subscriptions: there are 360 sittings. The register dates from the year 1849. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £150, with residence, in the gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Truro respectively, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Daniel Rechab Vaughan. The Mission church of The Good Shepherd, in Par green, erected in 1896 at a cost of £850, is a building of granite, with facings of polyphant stone, in the Early English style, from designs by Mr. Edmund Sedding, architect, of Plymouth, and consists of chancel and nave: there are 270 sittings. The Wesleyan chapel is a plain building of stone, erected in 1864, and has 400 sittings. The Bible Christian chapel, erected in 1875 as a Primitive Methodist chapel, has sittings for 250 persons. The reading room at Biscovey, established in 1889, has a library and another reading room at the Harbour. A parish room was erected in 1893, and there is a Seaman’s Institute holding 80 persons, and a mission room. Here are the extensive works and chief depot of the Cornwall Minerals district branch of the Great Western railway ; the buildings, which are of brick and have a frontage of about 500 feet, were erected by Sir Morton Peto bart. in 1872—4; the company employ about 60 persons. The smelting works at Par (now closed for many years) have a chimney 280 feet in height. The 5th Company of the 1st Cornwall (Duke of Cornwall’s) Volunteer Artillery, Western Division Royal Artillery, have a battery at Par, on the coast, their orderly room being at St. Blazey. The principal landowners are Charles Ebenezer Treffry esq. of Place House, Fowey; George Richard Gwavas Carlyon esq. of Tregrehan; Jonathan Rashleigh esq. of Menabilly, Tywardreath, and Lord Robartes.
