Historical Description

PELYNT is a parish and village, 4 miles north-west from Looe station on the Looe and Caradon railway and 9 south-west from Liskeard station on the Great Western railway, in the South Eastern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of West, Liskeard union and county court district, rural deanery of West, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Nun, or Nonna, is a building of stone chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transept, south porch and an embattled western tower of the Decorated period with pinnacles, 62 feet in height and containing 4 bells, of which the two first are dated 1683 and the others, 1773 and 1613: there are several monuments to the Trelawny family, with singular inscriptions, 1630—1885; one to Francis Buller esq. ob. 1615, with effigies and shields of arms, an acrostic and records of the repair of the monument in 1816 and 1835 ; there is also a tomb with effigy and inscription on brass, to William Achym esq. ob. 1589, and memorials to the Sawdy family, 1663—77: Sir Jonathan Trelawny bart.-D.D. who died July 19th, 1721, is buried in this church, where a model of his pastoral staff of wood, gilt, with copper ornaments, is preserved; he was bishop of Bristol 1685—88, and was one of the seven bishops committed to the Tower by James II.; in 1688 he was translated to the see of Exeter, and in 1707 to that of Winchester, and was prelate of the Order of the Garter: the church was thoroughly restored in 1882—3, a cost of £1,200, and has 200 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1678; marriages, 1693; burials, 1720. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £211, including 79 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Gen. the Right Hon. Sir Redvers Buller P.C., G.C.B. and held since 1891 by the Rev. William Shuckforth Grigson M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. Here are Methodist Association and Wesleyan chapels; the latter was rebuilt in the Gothic style in 1889 at a cost of £600: there is also a Wesleyan chapel at Trelawne in this parish, erected in 1885. The charities amount to about £6 yearly. On the western side of the beautiful valley through which flows the Trelawny river is St. Nun’s well, a small building with gabled front, containing a rude, square-headed doorway, about four feet high, leading into a kind of grotto with an arched roof; at the farther end on the floor is a round granite basin, carved on its exterior circumference with a series of Maltese crosses, inclosed in rings; into this basin the water drips from an opening at the back and escapes by a perforation at the bottom. Fairs are held on the first Tuesday in February and the 24th of June, yearly, for cattle. There are here several barrows, in one of which, opened a few years since, a jar containing bones and the head of a spear was found: another ancient earthwork, called “Bake Rings,” is about a mile south of Churchtown: “Hall Rings,” on the barton of Hall, is an elliptical inclosure of about two acres, with a double rampart 15 feet high. Trelawne, the seat of Sir William Lewis Salusbury-Trelawnv bart. D.L., J.P. is an ancient mansion, with modern additions, situated about 1 ½ miles south-east from the village. There are no manorial rights. The chief landowners are Sir W. L. Salusbury-Trelawny bart. and Francis Buller Howell esq. of Ethy, Lostwithiel. The soil is mixed; the subsoil is slate. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 4,683 acres; rateable value, £4,134; the population in 1891 was 662.

National School (mixed), for 123 children; average attendance, 102.
