Historical Description

POUGHILL is a parish and village 1 mile north-north-west from Stratton, 1 mile north-east from Bude and 9 miles west-north-west from Holsworthy station on the London and South Western railway, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred, petty sessional division and union of Stratton, Holsworthy county court district, rural deanery of Stratton, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Olave, erected in the latter part of the 14th century and partly rebuilt in the beginning of the 16th century, is an ancient building of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower 61 feet high, with good pinnacles, and containing 5 bells, dated respectively 1790, 1861, 1801, 1861 and 1790: the chancel retains a piscina and aumbry; and there are good carved oak benches, dating from circ. 1500; and stained windows to several members of the Camsew family: the tower was repaired in 1889, and a new clock with chimes presented, at a cost of £110, by the late Miss Gurney, in memory of her father, Sir Goldsworthy Gurney kt. the inventor of the Bude light, d. 28 Feb. 1875 : a stained window has been erected to the memory of Gertrude Mary, wife of the Very Rev, B. M. Cowie D.D. dean of Exeter, who died July 4th, 1886: in the north aisle is a copy of the letter of thanks sent by Charles I. to his Cornish subjects, dated from Sudley Castle, Feb. 10th, 1643: two mural paintings were discovered about 1896 and have been restored: there is also an emblazoned shield of the royal arms, dated 1655; the font dates from the 12th century: the church was restored in 1873, and during the period 1882—91, at a total cost of £804: there are 290 sittings: the churchyard is entered through a lych gate, rebuilt in 1897, and an avenue of limes leads up to the entrance. The register of the church and the parish accounts exist from the year 1527, and that of baptisms, marriages and burials from the year 1537. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £70, with residence and 3 ½ acres of glebe, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Thomas. William Lemon D.D. of Hertford College, Oxford. There is a Bible Christian chapel at Bush, erected in 1869, and in the village a Wesleyan chapel. A house and land were granted to the church in 1525 by William Derrill, last Abbot of Cliff, or Cleeve, Somerset. On an eminence at the south-eastern extremity of the parish, now called Stamford hill, the Parliamentary forces, commanded by the Earl of Stamford and Sir George Chudleigh, were signally defeated by the Royalists under Sir Ralph Hopton and Sir Beville Grenville, on Tuesday, May 16, 1643; a cannon placed on the summit, with an inscribed tablet, commemorates the event. Broomhill Manor House, the residence of George Brendon esq. is a building of stone, pleasantly situated and commanding extensive views of the surrounding country and the sea. Trelana is the seat of Col. William Henry Field J.P. Stamford Hill, the property of Clement Boughton Kingdon esq. J.P. is now occupied by Hugh S. Wise esq. The Bungalow is the residence of Richard Metherell esq. George Brendon esq. who is lord of the manor, Francis John Thynne esq. of 67 Eaton place, London S W; John King esq. Mr. Thomas Darracott and Mr. George Lewis Braund Bridgman are the chief landowners. The chief crops are grass with some corn. The area is 2,070 acres; (including 100 of water); rateable value, £2,650; the population in 1891 was 364.
