Historical Description

POUNDSTOCK is a parish, on the shore of Bude bay, 5 miles south-by-west from Stratton and 11 ½ west-south-west from Holsworthy station on the London and South Western railway, in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred and petty sessional division of Lesnewth, union of Stratton, Holsworthy county court district, rural deanery of Stratton, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Neot is an ancient building of stone and granite in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, north aisles, south transept and an embattled western tower, with crocketed pinnacles, containing 5 bells, all cast in 1791 : portions of the rood screen with painted figures on it remain, as well as some carved bench ends: the font is Transition Norman and has a square bowl with arcaded sides: there is a brass to the Trebarfoote family, 1616—30, and others of later dates: the church was repaired, with the exception of the tower, transept and porch, in 1896, under the direction of Mr. G. Fellowes Prynne, architect, at a cost of about £2,000: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1615. The living is a vicarage, net income £150, including 30 acres of glebe, with house, in the gift of B. Dayman esq. and others, and held since 1889 by the Rev. Ernest Presgrave Hebblethwaite M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. Here is a Free Methodist chapel, built in 1840, and a chapel for Bible Christians, erected in 1879 and seating 100 persons. The manorial rights are divided. The principal land owners are Edward Mucklow esq. of Whitstone Head, Holsworthy, and Mrs. S. G. Bake, of Lanteglos-by-Camelford. The soil is chiefly clay; subsoil, the same. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots. The area is 4,420 acres (including 190 of water); rateable value, £2,993 ; the population in 1891 was 496.

BANGERS, half a mile east; OOPPETHORNE, 1 mile north-east; PENLEAN, 1 mile south; TRESKINNICK CROSS, half a mile south-east; TREGOLE, a mile south-west, are hamlets.

A School Board of 5 members was formed 27 July, 1874; James Broad, clerk to the board & attendance officer.

Board School (mixed), built in 1877, for 85 children; average attendance, 45.
