Historical Description

Probus, a small village, about 3 miles west of Grampound, remarkable for the beautiful tower of its church, considered to be the finest piece of architecture in Cornwall. It is wholly built of granite, and beautifully covered with moss. It is 108 feet high to the battlements, and richly ornamented by buttresses, embrasures, and pinnacles. The church is situated on the brow of a hill, and the tower is at the west end.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

PROBUS, with a portion of the hamlet of TRESILLIAN, is a large parish and compact village, on the high road from Truro to St. Austell, 2 ½ miles south-west from Grampound Road station on the Cornwall (Great Western) railway, 5 ½ north-east from Truro and 8 southwest from St. Austell, in the Mid division of the county, western division of the hundred of Powder, petty sessional division of Powder South, Truro union and county court district, rural deanery of Powder, archdeaconry of Cornwall and diocese of Truro. Tresillian bridge, across the St. Clement’s creek of the river Fal, connects the parishes of Probus and Merther, which latter and Cornelly were originally portions of this parish. The parishes of Creed and Probus are connected by a bridge across the river Fal. The church of SS. Probus and Grace, made collegiate by King Athelstan A.D. 926, for a dean and four prebendaries, but dissolved at the Reformation, is an edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, aisles, north and south porches and a tower containing a clock and 6 bells: the tower, regarded by some as the finest in Cornwall, is constructed of St. Stephen’s granite and is 108 feet high to the battlements, the angles are supported by double buttresses, embellished with embrasures, and above these rise 8 crocketed pinnacles 13 feet in height, each with 4 lesser pinnacles; the plinth, cornices and upper storey are ornamented with small figures, foliage, fleurs-de-lis, animals and other carvings, and on the north and south sides are three Gothic niches: in the Golden aisle is a brass with effigies to John Wulvedon, ob. 6th November, 1514, and Cecilia, his wife, ob. 20th April, 1512, and on the floor is a stone inscribed to the Rev. William Cornish, 1789, and Jane, his wife, first cousin and heiress of John Kelly esq. of Exeter and Washbourne, in the county of Devon, 1773: in the chancel is a monument to Thomas Hawkins esq. J.P., M.P. who died in 1766; there are also various modern monuments: the chancel screen, formed of portions of the ancient screen and bench ends, is dated 1691, and bears an inscription as follows:-“Jesus, hear us, thy people, and send us grace and good for ever”: there are eight stained windows, chiefly memorials, including the east window, erected by the Rev. Prebendary Barnes, in memory of his parents, and the west window, erected in 1851 by the clergy of the neighbourhood, in memory of the Rev. Robert Lampen; in 1893 a memorial window was placed in the Golden aisle to William Trethewy esq. of Tregoose, by the tenantry on the Trewithen estates : the font is a memorial to Sarah, wife of the Rev. William Stackhouse, ob. March 7th, 1845, and the pulpit of Caen stone to William and Mary Stackhouse, ob. 1830 and 1806 : the rood stairs, open and in good condition, remain in the north wall, and in a reliquary in the north wall of the chancel are preserved two skulls, discovered under the altar during the Restoration, and supposed to be those of the patron saints of the church: a new organ was placed in the church in July, 1884, at a cost of £500, and in 1886 a reredos, the gift of Mrs. Barnes, was erected and the roof of the chancel decorated, from designs by Mr. J. P. St. Aubyn, architect, of London, as a memorial to the Rev. Prebendary Barnes M.A. late vicar: in 1851 the church was partly rebuilt and thoroughly restored, under the direction of the late G.E. Street R.A. architect, at a cost of £1,500; in 1888 the roof of the north aisle and chancel were again restored, and the nave, south aisle and porch re-roofed in 1893 at a cost of £250; there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1644. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £389, including 34 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Truro, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Clement Fox Harvey M.A. of Trinity College, Oxford, hon. canon of Truro, and surrogate. The Wesleyan chapel, a large stone building erected in 1825, was restored in 1893, and the gallery reseated with open pitch pine benches, at a cost of £500.; it has 450 sittings: there is also a Wesleyan chapel at Tresillian, in this parish: the Bible Christian chapel is a small stone building erected in 1881, and enlarged in 1889. Here is a school for boys, founded in 1853 by the late Rev. Daniel Trinder M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, vicar of St. Michael’s, Highgate, London N, 1878—88, and formerly curate of Probus, for giving a liberal education to the middle classes of Cornwall; Mr. Trinder died at Gibraltar, 2 April, 1888; the building was designed and erected under the supervision of the late G. E. Street esq. R.A. and has room for 40 boarders; the Rev. Richard Blackmore M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford, vicar of Merther and rector of Lamorran, is principal. In the village is a Reading room, supplied with the daily papers, magazines, games &c. with a small library attached, supported by subscription. Richard Tredenham esq. left lands of the annual value of £20, for the repairs of the church and for the poor of the parish: John Williams esq. also left £10 yearly for the support of the school and £5 per year for poor families not receiving parish pay. Trewithen, the property of C. H. T. Hawkins esq. and about one mile to the east of Probus church, is an ancient mansion of stone, restored by Thomas Hawkins esq. who died in 1766, before its completion ; the mansion stands in pasture and pleasure grounds of 200 acres, presenting, a very fine appearance when viewed from the road leading to Golden, and is at present occupied by John Gwennap Dennis Moore esq. J.P. Trehane, the seat of Captain William Stackhouse Church Pinwill, situated 2 ½ miles west from Probus church, was erected by the Williams family, formerly residents here in 1701—3 and does not appear to have undergone much change.
